2500K or 3570K?

Hello, I have been planning on waiting for the Ivy Bridge processors to be released before building my rig, however, my laptop has decided to act up a lot and well I don't know whether it'd be worth just getting the 2500K or waiting and getting the 3570K next year. I know the IvyB i5 will be better performance wise.

Originally I was going to stick with AMD and get a Bulldozer CPU, but the performance compared to what was promised left me disappointed so I am switching to Intel.

Usage will mainly be gaming, some video rendering and possibly some CPU intensive simulations.

And I will be doing some overclocking.

So basically, would it be better to replace an aging laptop with a 2500K or wait a few months for the top IvyB i5?

Thanks.

I have no patience so I'd buy now. You could always sell the 2500k later and get a 1155 IB chip. If you buy a Gen3 mobo now you should be fine for the upgrade.

From what I'v read the performance boost over SB won't be jaw dropping however they'll be lower wattage than SB leaving lot more room for OC'ing. I'm same as above impatient lol.

I was looking at the gen 3 boards about a week or so ago, performance on the 2500K is still good, especially for me haha. I was planning on using an air cooler to overclock, nothing insane like 5GHz, probably closer to 4. I have had my eye on the Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Z68 board, so I'd probably go for that motherboard to go with the 2500K. The IvyB i5 might be a little more expensive than the 2500K so I'd probably save a little bit of money there.

Thanks guys.

You are gonna buy Assrock???...WTH. They are shite, I've heard a lot of people complain how buggy they are. You dont even see Tom doing any reviews on them unless I missed it.

you should go see this Tom is building a custom pc for his friend using an asrock mobo, so doesn't tell him wrong stuff.

the new asrock mobos are good, you can safely buy one

LMAO...I had watched all those Bengal vids as soon as they were posted, I never caught the Assrock motherboard. I trust Toms judgement but I just dont think I could bring my self to reccommend let alone put one in someones system. Assrock must have made some major improvements for him to do this. I'm gonna have to do some research and bench test video perusing vids to understand this. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Part of my reason for looking at the Asrock board is that Tom is using it in the Bengal build, and I've seen some fairly decent reviews for it.

So far it looks like I'll be getting the;

Asrock Z68 Gen 3 Extreme 3

i5 2500K

Corsair Vengeance LP Black

Corsair TX V2 850

I already have a suitable monitor and a hard drive I can use until the prices go back down a little. I was thinking about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 or the Corsair A50 as a cheap cooling solution, any ideas on a good cooler for around £20 that can keep some decent temps while under a slight overclock?

asrock have been making great boards since x38, ok they do cheap stuff to but its no worse than the sick coloured crap asus and the rest push out too.

where asrock are great is innovation, asrock are the only people i know who did 754 and 939 socket boards with dx11 on boards, only people i know who did am3+am3 boards in one so you could swap out a x2 3800 and swap in a x6 1100t.

asrock are great, just underrated.

Yeah I was looking at that just a few minutes ago, since Scan have a today only offer with the hyper TX3 evo and the 2500K for £176 and it let me to the 212 evo, the OC3D review on it seems good too.

Edit: Just did a quick price up of the parts (Asrock board, Corsair LP, 2500K, 212 evo, TXv2 850) excluding an optical drive for installing stuff,

Scan: £461.72

Aria: £451.49

OcUK: £493.35

Novatech: £469.93

Would have to get the motherboard from novatech since it's the only place that still has it right now but at least it's free delivery, if Aria hadn't sold out of those boards it would been cheaper still.

Oh and the graphics card will be a GTX 275 for the time being.

Your psu is overkill? Do you really need 850w? Go for a good branded 650w-700w psu.

He's chosen a good brand (Corsair) and the 850w leave open the possibility of SLi or Crossfire in the future.

Seeing as those Corsair TX PSU's come with I think it's 5 year warranties, it's a good investment in a way.

Might actually be getting an OCZ ZT 750w now, I don't know anyone who has had problems with any OCZ products and my brother's 650w stealthXstream II works fine.

Also, I won't be sticking with this old 275 forever.

really? ocz is known to be extremely NON-reliable (i wish i never got my vertex, wish i went with a different brand) for power supplies you should get a corsair

Since I'll almost definately need less power, I don't exactly need a fully modular power supply, and it's quite a bit cheaper, I shall return to buying a corsair supply.

Edit: the TX650 only has 2 6pins, so that's not happening.

If I remember correctly, XFX power supplies are also manufactured by seasonic. Will therefore be getting a XFX 750W supply.

2400 or 2500K, £21.95 difference so is it worth just getting the 2500K?

yea heard the XFX psu are pretty good

if you can spend the extra definitly go with the 2500k, its amazing (i have mine at 4.8Ghz with almost no effort, you can easily get it passed 4.2 with no OCing experience and its so fast)

Aria

£113.52 (free shipping)

Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3

Dabs

£287.94 (free shipping) (-£10 from discount code)

i5 2500K

XFX 750w Core Edition

Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600MHz x2

Samsung 22x DVD-RW

Total cost = £401.46

OR, since I will almost definately not upgrade my cpu to an IvyB and benefiting from PCIe3, would it be worth going for this:

Dabs

i5 2500K

XFX 750w Core Edition

Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600MHz x2

Samsung 22x DVD-RW

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P

Due to there being a £10 off motherboard deal with the i5 2500k it makes the total cost: £402.93. However, there is a further £25 off that with the over £399 coupon code, making it £377.92

I am unsure whether or not to buy a hard drive now while the prices are still up, or use my old hard drive until the prices go down, it is a Hitachi HDS721616PLA380, it'll be coming from a 2006 desktop and upgraded to windows 7 64 bit which I have an upgrade disk for. I'd personally rather wait for the prices to drop and buy a WD Caviar Black.

The Corsair Vengeance memory is not on the memory support list of the boards, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm going to assume it'll work fine. Mfr#:CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9

Also, I have decided to go for a Corsair A70, I have some NH-T1 paste for it, but again, I would be greatful if you could suggest a better cooler at the £30 mark. £407.92 with the A70 and the gigabyte board which is what I'm leaning to right now.

I feel like I forgot something...
