Sup peeps, I've got a question, or a couple actually. I'm thinking of going 2011 instead of Ivy, but I'm just wondering how far can you OC a 3820 with the multiplier and all cores running. Also, when IB-E comes out, will it be 2011 socket too? Thanks peeps.

I don't know about overclocking but the 3820 is around the same performance wise as a 2600K

An Ivy Bridge i7 3770K would be faster, around 10% faster than a 2600K is the rumor anyway. IB-E will be on the 2011 socket but when IB-E is released it will have it's own chipset with new features that won't be on the current 2011 X79 boards. Same as with normal Ivy working in Z68 boards but also having their own chipset on Z77 boards. So, even though IB-E will work on X79 2011 boards there will be better boards with a better chipset when IB-E is released.

Hi there. I hope you don't mind if I use your thread?? It is regarding a similar choice. Last year I was in the process of getting a system from Mesh Computers but it fell through because they messed me around for months.

Since then I've been in no position to do much gaming, I have had 3brain surgeries to have what's called a deep brain stimmulator installed, basicly a computer box goes in your chest and runs 2 electrical rods into your brain. So that's why I've not posted for a while.

I am looking at a new OC bundle to replace my AMD 940 BE@3.4ghz. I will be keeping my current box, HE6970 and 950W Psu. The rig will be used for retraining for a coreer change and for gaming. Games inc, BF3, Diablo3, WoW and many more.

So with a budget of £700~ I am considering the i5 2500 or the i7 3920. So I've scoured the reviews and the forum q&a and can't seem to choose. Do I 1 follow the favorite and get a 2500k or try to futureproof myself and get the 3820. With newer games starting to use more cores and some even more threads is it still worth buying the 2500k?.

I have my eye on 2 bundles,

3820;

Intel Core i7 3820, 3.6GHz Quad Core + Hyperthreading @4.5ghz

Asus Sabertooth X79, Intel X79 Chipset

16GB Total (4x4GB) Corsair Vengeance LP, DDR3, 1600MHzE

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro BK016 Performance CPU Cooler

Or

i5 2500

Intel Core i5 2500K, 3.3Ghz Quad Core @4.7ghz

Asus P8Z68-V, Gen3, Intel Z68

8Gb (2x4Gb) Corsair Vengeance LP, DDR3, 1600Mhz

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced - Performance CPU Cooler!

With the second option I save a couple hundred £ so may buy a SSD with the remainder. If i go for the 3820 i will get the SSD a month or so later. There is also the option of either another HD 6970 when my current isn't doing the job I ask of it. That's another day and another question . Would you buy a second 6970 with PCI-e 2.1 or a single 7970 with PCI-e 3??

Well thank you all for any input and advice.

Thanks

If it's for gaming get the 2500k you won't notice the difference. Games using more cores wont give you an advantage in games, the GPU is what gives you the performance, games will just make use of the cores instead of not using them. You would get a slight FPS boost from games that are more CPU bound but we are talking only a few FPS, nothing worth spending more money on a CPU for anyway.
