2.5 years later, still running strong!

It takes great restraint to let a PC sit for 2.5 years, untouched, un-upgraded.... But I have achieved this feat. Let's see if I can go for 5 years. :huh:

Specs (as far as I can remember....)

-AMD Phenom X6 @ 4.2ghz
-Asus Sabertooth 990FX
-16gb G.Skill Ripjaws X (I think.... ???)
-2 x Sapphire Radeon 6870
-PCP&C PSU (600 or 750w I think)
-Fractal Designs R2 Case
-Noctua NH-D14 (I think, or something very similar)
-LG Bluray Drive
-128gb OCZ Vertex 4 SSD
-6 x 2TB WD Green HDD

I haven't been in the PC scene for years now but I used to be addicted to the tune of about $3000 / month worth of parts and cooling gear Lol.

My big thing was phase change, cascades, ln2/dice and massive overclocks and I would burn up hardware like it was paper haha.

I feel like I have successfully been weened off of my PC addiction thankfully. The only reason I don't frequent the forums anymore is to not reignite that flame. I've got a family now that depends on me and I absolutely can't return to my old PC whoring habits.

I don't even remember the gear in my current setup. I know its got a Phenom X6 clocked at 4.2ghz on a Sabertooth mobo, 16gb of ram (corsair perhaps), twin 6870's, a 256gb SSD, and 12tb of mechanical storage. And a BDRW drive. Couldn't even be more specific than that, think the case is a Fractal R2. Don't even remember who makes the heatsink or what its called, all I remember about it is that it was a tight fit.

I like to live vicariously through other peoples rig galleries nowadays.

If you're on XS forums you should be able to search some of my old cascade builds and mega overclocks. OC3D lost all of my pix that were hosted here on the old image server.

I managed almost 4 years with my last setup, which was a Phenom II X4 955, Gigabyte 790FX board, and a Sapphire HD4870. The only thing that made me open the case was the memory dying and then the graphics card which I replaced with a GTX 560. Needless to say my addiction to the PC scene waned quite a lot, but it came back earlier this year with a fire, and then Bam! New Rig Time.

Although with no major high-end updates coming from Intel or AMD in the immediate future, I think we all could be waiting nearly 5 years.

You could stick to a traditional air-cooled rig and upgrade every 2 or 3 years with money saved up over that period. You don't have to do a complete overhaul i.e. just upgrade the components that would give you the most benefit for your needs.

Which pretty much just means your GPU for now. Anyone with a Sandy Bridge CPU upwards has little reason to upgrade, at least until Intel gets some proper performance increases going.

Nice to see you back, Fragtek. It might not be cutting edge but it's still a damn nice looking rig

post rig specs in Op please for other to enjoy. Mines been going for about the same time with just 2 upgrades changed ssd's black friday 2012 and swapped out 6950 flashed 6079 xfire for 7970 xfire earlier this year oh and changed from a UD5 mobo to a UD7 mobo just cause i could and wanted dual 16x slots lol.

I have switched pretty much solely to console gaming which has helped tremendously with curbing the need and appetite to constantly upgrade and keep ahead of the low FPS curve.

I'm curious how long have you been running your hex core at 4.2? what voltage do you run at? (i assume 1090t or 1100t)

I believe it's a 1090T. I've been running it at that freq since the day the rig was built. I can't remember what the vcore is. When I get home I can check though!

My bad, looks like I downclocked it to 4ghz, I think I did that for the safety of the proccy since I was folding for a while and didn't want to burn it down.

I have a hankering to clock it back up right now though.... :lol:

2.5 years? i am now in a state where i am rather happy with my build, but it won't last 2.5 years. i intend to stick to the CPU and mainboard for a while, depends on how much of a difference skylake + DDR4 are going to make, but that's still at least two years away.
GPU i intend to upgrade with the launch of star citizen.
i couldn't stick to a setup for that long of a time, and even if it's not an upgrade, the cable management can always be improved
