1600, 1866 or 2133MHz

Hi All
I'm about to build another rig as my good old QX9770 system packed up and i am not sure what ram speed to go for. I want a 8gb x 4gb corsair vengeance pro set to go in the MSI Z87 GD65 board with a i5 4670K. Am i right that for gaming and general everyday use 1600 is enough or it worth going for a 1866 or 2133 kit or would max 1866 do or dose it not matter.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

I'd get whatever the cheapest is - the 1600MHz. For gaming and everyday usage the difference is so tiny, I don't think you'll ever notice it outside benchmarks.

The only time it does matter however is if you want to game with an APU, but if you're using a dedicated graphics card (which you should be if you're serious about gaming), the the difference is negligible between the faster memories. I myself have DDR3-1333MHz in all my rigs. ^_^

AFAIK I don't think that it really matters enough to justify getting any more than 1866MHz ram unless you're editing. Also unless you're editing you definitely don't need 32GB of ram, probably only 16GB at most for just gaming.

This pretty much sums up what the entire thread is going to be :)

Thanks guys that has help me with making my mind up.

Just one little thing what is Pc3-1490 or Pc3-15000 etc that i see on the ram

eg: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8gb (2 X 4gb) Memory Kit Pc3-15000 1866mhz Ddr3 Dram Unbuffered (red)

Basically PC3 means it's DDR3 ram and the number following it's the peak transfer rate of the kit, 14900/15000 is 1866, you could call them synonyms. Just look at the speed the kit is rated for 1600/1866/2133... don't worry about PC3.

Thanks again guys that sums up all i need to know about this. Really appreciate it. Im now off to search for a good price for 8gb of 1600mhz. :)

Linus did a pretty good benchmark video between low speed and high speed ram, 1333 all the way up to 2400.

The difference was literally 1fps in most scenarios, Sometimes not even that.

1600 is perfect for gaming.

Here's the video as reference for you :) -

And a few graphs taken from the video -
