120Hz vs 1440p

So it's almost 6am so my mind was wandering but I was wandering given the choice which would you prefer and why (let's assume you have a GPU for it if you don't :D) a 120Hz monitor @1080p or a 60Hz monitor @1440p?

I'd also go for the 2560x1440 monitor as it's a better allround screen, 3d is only useful for gaming and 3d movies

120hz here. Makes everything so much smoother looking especially in fps games.

Resolution isn't everything to me considering one of my favorite games counter strike source I run at 800x600.

Depends what size screen for me. Under 24'' I'd go for the 120hz, above that the 1440p.

I have a mate who plays xbox who games on a 15 inch monitor, and he argues the same points about the smaller screens being better for shooting. If we tell him to get a nuke on MW2, he can in pretty much every game as he's just that good at it. So I would kind of agree that the smaller screens are better for that

Given the choice I would love to go 120Hz just for the thought of playing sim racing games in 3D. I haven't had a chance to ever play any in 3D but I've heard it adds quite a bit to the immersion experience.

That's interesting about the smaller screen. I moved up to a bigger monitor on my ps3 and did notice that I wasn't making kills that I thought I should've been and just thought my shot had got worse, never thought of it being the monitor because the monitor i upgraded to was far better in terms of colour and quality etc.

also you've got to remember that getting a nuke on mw2 isn't that hard. Maybe being able to do it on command is actually quite good though :P

I have been pondering this question for a few weeks now. Was getting ready to pull the trigger on a 120hz Ben-q. But then I got to reading and reading, I ordered myself a shimian 27 inch 2560x1440. Should be here in a week or so. So stoked! Basically an apple cinema display for 1/4 of the price.

My two cents...

Ok here I go...(sigh)

If you are only going to be playing on a single monitor go for a high-res monitor with a high quality IPS panel. Sure you don't get 120Hz or 3D with those but chances are most modern games played at the highest settings are going to run at less than 120 fps anyway (unless you run multi-gpu). However if you do need 120Hz to be more competitive at FPS or give a damn about 3D then go for those but bear in mind that those are most likely going to be TN panels.

Now if you want to run Nvidia Surround or EyeFinity, use 1080 monitors for that. You CAN do the same with high-res panels but I advise against it if you use your system purely for gaming. Same considerations apply when choosing panel technologies for this configuration as well.

Actually I think if you have a beast of a GPU, or maybe even two. The 120HZ could be a good choice. Like when you have GTX 670s SLI.

If you have two gtx 670's those would push a higher resolution fine. The 1440p overclockable 120hz catleaps are just around the corner. Best of both worlds?

Catleaps sucks. It's a korean company that doesn't ship to other parts of the world anyways. And if you'd want one, you would need to buy it second hand, which would mean no warranty. So if it breaks, you're basically peep'd.

Negative Ghost rider. Catleaps don't "suck". They are the very same panels used in apple cinema displays, LG and the Dell High end IPS screens. They are rejected by apple and dell for whatever the reason, usually something that isn't tangible to non-engineers. There is a chance of a few dead pixels unless you opt for the pixel perfect assured one for an extra 30 bucks (these are brand new displays mind you) Not second hand. 2 Dead pixels out of 4 million? Hah, i'll take it. Apple cinema display =$1000 bucks, Catleap=$300, i'll take my chances. If you buy from a reputable ebuyer, just check the feedback, they will do refunds and ship world wide, I just ordered one, not sure where your info is coming from. Basically you are right it is a korean company, and support will be lacking after the initial ebuyer warranty but they are LG panels, in a korean housing. Same As the Shimian. 120hz.net the catleaps have a huge support following and enthusiast base. Stick to a terrible TN panel if you want :) Risk/reward

Yup, as long as you pay the extra you should be fine. Although I've heard that the build quality is pretty dire.
