Perfect timing

Just when they get some competition from AMD & QUALCOMM they cut their iconic advertising.

The report has claimed that these cuts will be in the region of 40-60%, with these cuts coming from INtel's Marketing and channel programs, redirecting funds to other efforts. It is suggested that this funding is moving to drive Intel's business and data centre efforts and to improve Intel's profits and margins.
As of May 2017, according to Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/companies/intel/) Intel has a net worth of: $170.3 Billion.
And in sales: $59.39 Billion.

What do they need to improve with their profits exactly? ...

Net worth and sales aren't the same as profits, mate. You could have $60 billion in sales, but if your expenses are higher you're still at a loss. That being said, Forbes states that profits are at $10 billion, which isn't too shabby at all obvs.

I think this statement may be about revenue growth as well. I can't really find accurate data on Intel's Year-over-Year revenue growth, but I did recently read an article stating that analysts are predicting Intel's revenue to grow at an annual rate of 1~4% (or something along those lines). Again, I'm not sure how accurate that is, but if it's true, that could definitely be improved.

But yeah, you're right. Intel is doing great atm so they definitely don't need to improve their profits.

Intel have been spending money hand over fist, though. For a while this was fine, as they were the only real player in the CPU market. Now that AMD are taking a bite of their apple? yeah, they will need to cut things down a bit in order to make pricing.

If Ryzen 2 clocks to 4.5ghz Intel are going to have to look at their prices again. And if there is one thing Intel absolutely hates doing it is dropping prices.

And they do need to improve their profits. Otherwise people won't want to invest and share prices will drop, making them worth less. Investors want to see gains.. That is why AMD is always doing these press things showing their profits etc etc.

The sad part of many corporations is that it is driven harder by the stakeholders/majority shareholders whether companies like it or not.

if it can make them 5000% more money, they will tell a company to sack 10,000 staff.

Indeed and whilst the world runs on capitalism it will never be a good world, long gone are the days where a business would turn a reasonable profit to enable it to pay the workforce and owners and some for R&D

If Intel are that confident there next CPUs are going to be far and away more powerful than they don't really need the advertisement.
