US Legislator calls Star Wars: Battlefront II's loot boxes "predatory"

Will this eventually lead to new regulations?

Read more on calls to regulate in-game loot/gambling systems in the US.

Loot boxes like this have also been a massive problem in the MMO Star Wars The Old Republic, Another EA owned game, Friend of mine got so addicted to these stupid loot boxes that he spent his entire months wages and nearly got kicked out of his apartment, Yes a grown man should know better but these things are as someone recently pointed out, Setup with the help of psychologists to get you hooked.

Not that I'm aware of, AFAIK it's still an EA run title.

Turbine run -

Asheron's Call
Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings
Dungeons & Dragons Online
The Lord of the Rings Online
Infinite Crisis
Batman: Arkham Underworld
Game of Thrones: Conquest

Still owned by EA, and the whole game lives on micro-transactions with loot boxes being a huge part of it. If that was banned, it would mean the end of SWTOR. This is after all a development that transpired because people didn't want to subscribe with a monthly fee

This is just stupid. I hate loot boxes as much as the next guy but don't we all pretty much know what they are?

It's like the "predatory lending" thing that went around a while back. Blame the credit companies because some buy borrowed $400,000 on a $25,000 a year salary and couldn't pay it back. Politicians will use any excuse to impose new regulations.

To be fair all this is doing is rightfully getting these actions labelled as gambling, Nothing more, If people still want to partake they can but it will be classed as gambling and it will let uninformed parents know that a certain game has gambling elements so little johnny doesn;t get moms credit card and spend $2000.

I wouldnt mind them being present provided they aren't pay2win.

I think Rift mmo does it quite well. Most of its cosmetic, but you can get some bonuses that help with farming and collections. It does at least give a guaranteed currency which you can spend on gear.

The RNG part of Rift is the chance to get some legendary mounts iirc.

If RNG is involved in any way with real world money then it is gambling, I'm all for that being regulated.

I myself have zero problem with microtransactions given that they aren't pay 2 win or RNG as both are extremely exploitative of people, If they're cosmetic only then yeah you can have a million different things for sale and it's fine.

Elite Dangerous does MT's right IMO, They only sell paintjobs, Name plates, Ship kits which may add a spoiler etc... to the ship, But don;t sell anything that boosts stats or anything that is an RNG box.
