Eleven Foxconn workers leap from high buildings in suicide attempts, nine fatally.

It's sad indeed. Unfortunately the price in human terms of low cost labour is always high. This is unlikely to change all the while that companies demand large profits and we demand low cost items.

Slightly cynically, it's not a high rate really. The UK has a suicide rate of 5 per 100000. By averages we'd expect 40 to have committed suicide for 800000 workers. And that's not adjusting for the fact they do very soul-sapping work for low wages and long hours.

So in some ways, it's actually less than you'd expect.
