i'd prefer crappy copper than loads of my taxes going into it. I'm pretty sure BT/Virgin/et all can make a pretty good busines case out of upgrading the networks.

Well it is very good if your current ISP changes it for you, but then all of a sudden you change your ISP. The ISP you were with previously will become very P!$$£D with you. So end of the day it is much better if the Government does it or BT.

Well FTTC should come along within the next decade, the only issue is virgin's cable is technically faster (50 Mbps compared to 40 Mbps) and they will probably install it in more or less the same places. I have a 100 meg fibre line on BT's private trial so it's all good for me .

Same thing with me!!

My parents have tried to upgrade the internet in our house, but sadly failed because apparently we have a line capable of only 3MB internet. I'm clueless on networking/broadband (well, I know the basics) and - like I said - i'd love to get a better internet package, but it just seems a little bit impossible at this moment in time

I'm on aluminium (that's a bit like normal copper wire, only made when the government was very poor and haven't replaced it) and 2 miles from the exchange. However I live in the sticks, where the average age is probably well over 50 and the number of users for internet is pretty low. Hence at 3:30-4:00 am (as every enthusiast knows a brilliant time to install XP etc.) I got 7MbPs. The limiting factor was actually the websites' download (for drivers) servers. (4.5MbPs) -thats bits not bytes people
