any reason why they haven't gone for the higher binned X48 chipset for such a release?

no doubt they are waiting for a full spread of new Q series to be released, then release their new x48 based boards.

Yeah the X48 is on its way, and I've heard the X48 will also have a T3R (DDR3) board in the range.

Problem is finding a UK retailer for DFI boards, I was looking for the DFI LanParty DK P35-T2RS couldn't find one anywhere in the UK and ended up buying an MSI board

That is an P35, whereas this is an X38, so yes, it will be better
