Advice on a media system.

I need advice on a build for video playback on a 42" 1080p screen. The TV doesn't have USB capabilities and though a new TV is on the list of things to buy, there's far more important items to buy right now as the reason behind needing a new small build is the fact me and the girlfriend just got our own place and the PC is now in a... Wait for it... Dedicated PC room. POW! I got the spare room, oh yeah! But now things aren't as simple as having a bedroom where everything is close together and cables work perfectly to hook up my monitor and TV.

I though of options like the WD TV thingy, routing the ethernet from the PC room to the living room with those plug socket things, at this point the price is getting closer to a low end PC build where I can have a fully functioning computer with a dedicated sound card for surround sound, internet browsing, lots of storage and it can use WiFi as the speeds don't need to be majorly fast as it is not for gaming.

I feel like slapping myself a million times as I've just sold a 2500k, ASUS Maximus iv gene-z gen3 board and 8gb 1600mhz mushkin ram for £200! but suppose I can laugh it off

Now I've only ever built gaming computers which obviously work perfectly for watching movies on my TV but I've never built a dedicated computer for media.

Processor and graphics - Do I need dedicated graphics, if yes then what like? If no then do I need an ordinary CPU or an APU?

Ram - is 4gb enough?

MoBo - I have no idea what to buy for this purpose.

What sound card should I get?

There will need to be a small SSD in there.

Storage is sorted.

I'm clear on what PSU to buy.

I am open to ideas on the case but it has to be black and can not be taller than 480mm or have a depth more than 400mm, the closer to these measurements the better though. They are the measurements of the TV stand (3000mm in length) and I have a stormtrooper next to it just now

I'd love to keep the build cost as low as possible without having something slow and hard to live with and I think a maximum of £350 is sufficient, if I am underestimating then please let me know

Sorry about the long post but I love to try and clear things up.

I was thinking:

- Core i3 3225 /3.3GHz Intel Dual Core with HyperThreading and Intel HD4000 GFX
- Gigabyte H77n-WiFi /Mini-ITX board with USB3.0, Sata III and WiFi
- Cooler Master Elite 120 /Mini-ITX case. H: 207mm D: 401mm USB3.0
- Corsair VS350 /Dirt cheap PSU. Can get a CX430M if you want modular.
- Any RAM /1333MHz+ CL9 and 1.5 Volt or lower. 4GB will suffice
- 30-60GB SSD /30 is enough for Windows. Intel/Corsair/Samsung/Kingston/Crucial/Sandisk
- Asus Xonar D2X /Epic surround sound card. Pricey though.

Compromises that you can make to save money:

> Get an APU or a cheaper i3/ Pentium CPU. Graphics will be less but most will suffice for movies.
> Get a cheaper m-ITX motherboard. You'll sacrifice USB3 and WiFi.
> Get an Asus Xonar DGX, which is an entry level sound card or
> Use on-board sound while saving up for a proper sound card.

Can always look for used parts to save some money as well

Would an A10 6800K with no dedicated graphics be sufficient for playing high def movies? Rawz has one for sale at £70 so I could just get that if it is sufficient.
