Question OCCT: Haswell and Linpack AVX?

Hi all, happy new year!!!

Quick question - if I run an OCCT Linpack stress test on my 4770K, should I tick the 'AVX Capable Linpack' box? Do you do this on your own Haswell chip?

As far as I've learnt up to now, certain stress tests aren't recommended because of how they apply a load using AVX instructions (e.g. Prime95). In AIDA64 I've done the combo tests, with FPU enabled (which uses AVX and AVX2) and passed fine, BUT an FPU only test hits unnacceptable temps. After reading around I'd decided that this AVX only test didn't really represent a real-world scenario for me, so I disregarded it.

Now, I know from one of TTL's reviews that he applied the AVX element of the test to a 4770K because he talked about it (the infamous Asus Maximus VI review). If I do the same my chip hits 85+ °c within 5 minutes.

Should I consider this important, or is an OCCT Linpack pass with no AVX on a 4770K fine?

I stopped using OCCT with AVX Checked, because temps would reach over 100 degrees within minutes on my 4770K. I used AIDA and left it for about 8 hours, and everything was fine, then when i went to render a video in Sony Vegas, it BSOD with error 124, bumped up the voltage one notch and its been fine ever since.

You should test stability using the applications you use on a day to day bases, so if you game have heavy gaming sessions to see if its stable, or if you video edit, render a movie using stupidest setting you can find to see how it does!

Each stress test will test the CPU in different ways that's why no one stress test meets all criteria!

Awesome, cheers MrKambo So, difficulty keeping a cool, stable system going under full on AVX tests like AIDA64's or OCCT's aren't necessarily seen as an outright overclock fail. Great to know how it's percieved, this is the impression I'd gotten anyway, but it felt a bit vague.

My machine got through a 11 hour AIDA full test (CPU/FPU/Cachge/Mem) with no issues and a max temp of 81°c, running at 4.2GHZ/4.3GHz turbo on air (Phanteks PH-TC14PE). It's also passed more stress tests like OCCT's (without the AVX), and Intel's XTU tests. The only time it did fall over was, oddly, during a benchmark in XTU. I tinkered with it a bit and it's not happened since. Happy days

My build is primarily designed for music production, and I had thought about what you've said too - it seem to make sense. I might set up some OTT 'tune' once all my software is installed with a ton of synths, compressors, EQ's, and more going at once. It's gonna sound like Skrillex falling down a flight of stairs

To be honest, some people might say the music I produce sounds like that anyway
