IKEA's Republic of Gamers range of gaming furnishings is now available in the UK

Ikeas stuff is so vastly overpriced as it's all very low quality in general, Mix in the ROG branding and it's severely over priced junk.

its used to be decent quality but cheap. Times have changed

For most of Ikeas existence they've sold cheap crap but they had prices to match, Now it's cheap crap and high prices.

I got a desk from there that cost upwards of £200 not long ago, Found out the inside was cardboard strips and the outer part was just hardboard.

Now that's a fair point... Kinda realized it right after I had posted my previous post :p

Sometimes its not the material but the tech used :)

Goretex material is cheap as hell to produce, yet the layering technique used makes it stupidly expensive. (i know, i know, quite an extreme example but just trying to make the point)

Its over charged for sure, but the honey comb card within is impressively strong. I wouldnt mind the cardboard inside since it makes it light and still strong. My issue is the terrible quality finish on the exterior.. takes almost zero effort to scratch the surface.

IKEA desks have been the only affordable way to get an adjustable desk without all the fluff that furniture shops insist on including. The quality of the materials are pants, but until someone else comes along and offers something better, I don't see myself using another option.

Make your own. Iigloo and similar brands make good quality desktops. As well as the rest that goes with it.

To be fair you can get a Linnmon top with 4 Adil legs for like £20, the surface on the Linnmon is a bit nasty and won't last but the hex arrangement inside means its relatively strong, is it not still cheaper to get a Linnmon/Adils and just put your own wood top on? Does anyone know better alternatives that doesn't break into vastly different price points?

Budget is the biggest factor

As I said, Iiglo desktops. Thick MDF in 150cm or 180cm sizes, about 80cm deep. Screw points pre installed on the underside for secure leg attachments via custom choices or their own legs. Alternatively you can attach their mechanical legs. So there are options.

I use the desk top on my mechanical legs I aquired from work. Its a solid good quality top that seems to easily resist minor impacts. No scratches yet either. Dont think ill ever touch an IKEA desk again.

Buy some wood and make one yourself. It'll be much cheaper other than time involved if you already have the tools.

You're paying for convenience after all. That's where the majority of the investment goes

Yeah I've looked at the custom route, I'm somewhat experienced with woodwork and don't mind putting the time in, just whenever I look at the full custom route it seems to end up looking quite a bit more expensive for essentially the same result as a say Linnmon with 5mm of MDF screwed on top when factoring in shipping, and tool cost and such, and time is money when self employed too ofc

After all, solid wood is a lot more expensive per volume than some very cleverly put together MDF and thin air, Ikea's internals are quite smart and I've definitely put those desks through their paces (jumped on one), they're ridiculously cheap, just got an easily scratched surface.

Not sure what Iigloo is I'm afraid, all I can see under than name is insurance

Thats exactly the point I made. I think thats why IKEA try to justify their prices. ITs crept up over the years, but the tech if we call it that to make light yet strong desks is good.

They do last though. My 1.75m one I bought 10 years ago is in the same condition I bought it.

I've had only a couple of issues with my Linnom desks. I've owned three different sizes now over the last ten years and they're all still in perfectly adequate condition. The largest one I had buckled in the centre over the years of having a heavy monitor on it, but I never noticed it until I took it apart so it's a moot point really.

The adjustable legs are poorly made. They squeak and rattle randomly and are not easy to set up. But honestly, for the little money I paid, it was better than anything else I could find. If I built one myself, it would take a long time and I'd need to buy or rent equipment. DIY is awesome if your life is set up for it.

I've never heard of Iigloo. I'll look them up. If I can find an alternative that's better built and doesn't cost €500, I'd be up for it for sure. But the convenience of the IKEA stuff is a huge pro for me.
