Optimal disk layout/types

Hey guys,

Looking at building a new machine based on X99 gen2 platform and looking for some advice on HDD layout. Specifically the use of M2 as the boot/OS drive and I have read about setting up a separate SSD disk for games/apps. I do not plan on the use of any mech drives in this new build.

I have also read suggestions about setting up the games/apps drive as a RAID0 container for even faster perf. Maybe overkill?

Thanks,

Paul

You really won't see any performance difference between an single ssd vs a raid0 of them just slightly better loading times. Performance increase would be significant if you plan to do video editing.
And when you mean m.2 do you can -and maybe should- go for NVME in order to get that performance boost.

As for the games drive I suggest you get a 1TB drive they might be "slow" but they have plenty of space or you could opt for getting something like faster 480GB ssds and adding more once you fill them up. Manufacturer wise you can trust samsung, crucial and adata.

As said above I wouldn't recommend RAID 0 for Games/Apps, though I can't recommend against it either so up to you.

Crucial BX/MX, Sandisk Ultra II, Samsung EVO, Kingston, are usually the best £/GB.

1TB drives aren't slow.

m2/nvme for OS/apps
standard ssd / nvme ssd for Games is a big win

I'm in the no spinning discs category, I don't think I could go back

I'm waiting until Ebuyer to redo their special on 960GB Sandisk SSD for £150, so I can begrudgingly move to Windows 10. I think this is the sweet spot for OS and game storage without breaking the bank.

Same Myst....the Sandisk 960GB was one of the drives I was considering as my games/apps drive. The other is the Samsung EVO 500GB drive.

Hard not to consider the Sandisk for capacity and price. Seems like a good product.

I've used them in the past, worth the £/GB.

Just a heads up - Ebuyer again have the Sandisk 960GB Ultra II for £149.99 today only .

Use the promo code SSD. Free shipping too if you're not in a hurry for one.
