Yes. It has an onboard controller and it is mighty. NAND drives use similar approach. The more chips you have faster the drive. That is why bigger drives perform better than smaller ones. This is the same idea but on steroids.

Linus did a Holy $H!T video about it.

Hmm. How come that Corsair MP600 is not on the list? It’s also PCIe 4.0
