Since he plays DayZ and Arma 3 any AMD cpu will struggle. They just hate those cpus.

Those are all the worst possible games for a bulldozer CPU. For a temporary slight boost (if he is running windows 7) then get the various windows 7 improvement fixes that microsoft offer for AMD cpus.

The fx 4100 is junk. Ideally he needs to get atleast either a newer fx (6350 or higher) or a low end i5 minimum for those games.

Also.. last time i updated my 7950 drivers.. my performance tanked. I complained to AMD on their driver survey but it wasn't till after that i realized that Afterburner reset my main profile(i felt like an idiot yes lol) so it dropped the clocks down from 1000/1250mhz to 450/500mhz. Which is the clocks meant for power saving.. FPS in one game went from staying in the 70s all the way to barely keep 24 dropping to 18. Maybe his software did that too. Worth checking out. Just need to bump it back up.
All latest drivers with clean installation

Well me and him were talking recently about getting him over to Intel and he said he is just going to switch over to Intel rather than get another AMD cpu.

That board does support overclocking. Get an 8320 (or a 8350) and overclock them as shown here http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/c...e_cpu_review/2
The best and least expensive option you have at the moment

It's not exactly a board you would want to OC an 8 core CPU. It will do it to a certain point. Really few boards can OC an amd 8 core cpu to where they need to be to compete with intel. He's better off going intel. Hell an i3 would do btter than his 4 core if money is an issue.

The motherboard is fine for overclocking. I'm yet to hit an issue with mine and its had 1.4v through it no sweat.

To compete the i7 4770k he would need to get the FX up to 5.3Ghz

It's not only a matter of Board (clearly anything lower tha a ud9 990fx or a crosshair formula v would have a hard time) but it would also require, a custom waterloop with a thick 360mm rad just for the cpu, vrms, and northbridge

Yeah it'll be the 4100. A friend had to change from a FX4100 to a FX6300 to get some of those games playing right (that was with a hd7950 GPU).

A 780 Ti on the ancient 775 platform ? That's honestly quite dumb XD
