GTX980 low fps in most games.

Hello, I have a friend with a GTX980 and in all games he plays I get low fps (around 20-40fps) in each game.

His Specs are - AMD FX-4100 @4ghz
ASUS M5A99X EVO
8GB Mushkin Silverline @1600MHz
Inno GTX 980 @ stock clocks
Coolermaster 750w PSU
Windows 7 64-bit
2TB Seagate HDD
60GB Sandisk SSD

Does anyone know how I could help him out ? Could it be a CPU bottleneck at all ?

Thanks, Dario.

Well yeah the CPU is but I agree with Tripp. What games does he play and at what settings/resolution?

Dayz
Arma 3
Battlefield 4
Assassins Creed: Unity
Dying Light
Skyrim
Thats the games he plays the most and all resolution are at 1920x1080. I should also mention that all the games are getting 20-40fps on normal settings in all game.

best way to see if the CPU is limiting the card would be to decrease the detail, if the CPU is limiting the card you would see next to no change in FPS, because thats all the throughput it can provide.

I might be wrong, but could be a way to find out

Yeah we messed about with the settings earlier and there was no change

Did you update the drivers?

Also.. last time i updated my 7950 drivers.. my performance tanked. I complained to AMD on their driver survey but it wasn't till after that i realized that Afterburner reset my main profile(i felt like an idiot yes lol) so it dropped the clocks down from 1000/1250mhz to 450/500mhz. Which is the clocks meant for power saving.. FPS in one game went from staying in the 70s all the way to barely keep 24 dropping to 18. Maybe his software did that too. Worth checking out. Just need to bump it back up.

Well, they're all very cpu heavy games. Some because of online matchmaking, Skyrim because it only uses 2 threads ( and hates AMD cores ) and AC Unity because it plain sucks.

I bet he's cpu limited. However I would never advice such an unbalanced build, since Bulldozer was a terrible architecture and a 980 costs so much more than a 970/290 that you could actually use the money saved by not buying it to get a better platform

^Agreed. A switch to the Intel platform would be best for him (can he still send the 980 back (within 2 weeks of online purchase without any reasoning as per EU law)?).

If he can't return the card and/or afford a platform upgrade, I suggest he picks up an 8320 somewhere. They're cheap as chips and will help him out in at least some of the games; The ones that makes good uses of multiple threads and don't rely heavily on single threaded performance.

With the games he plays though; Intel is the way forward.

All the games you listed are all CPU heavy, To save on money he should move up to an AMD 8 core, Would save completely swapping out the mobo.

Moving to an Intel platform would be the better option but if money is an issue then an 8350 would be a good option.
