IMO, you need to change all of it, for the best price vrs proformance.

CPU i5 2500k. k stands for unlocked and unleashed, a few bumps and your at 4.2ghz

MOBO any gen 3 motherbord, they have support for up and coming ivry bridge cpu's and pci-e 3. if you don't then you will not be future proff.

RAM G-skill 1600mhz 8gb's for £38, cheap as chips.

HDD £140 is to much, Get an ssd corsair 120gb for £120 and when problems in tiland are sorted, 1 tb hdd will be back down to the £50 mark.

I agree on those suggestions. The hdd prizes is said to be back to normal in 1 year approximately. He/she could start of with SSd and maybe a second hand hdd until prizes falls?

Yep, for the time being get a 120GB SSD and a small HDD for temporary storage. Once prices normalize (although, you may be waiting for over a year) get a 1TB+ drive. However, if you can justify the current HDD prices, then by all means get one and buy another later on .
