New build, could use help/advise...

Hey guys first let me start of by saying thanks in advance to anyone who is able to give any help or advise. I'm about to start a new rig for my self and could use some advise particularly where it pertains to the motherboard. As it sit I am looking at;

MOBO: rampage 4 extreme 2011
Cpu: i7 3930
ssd: Corsair Force Series GT
mem: 16 Gb corsair vengance
power: 650w corsair gold rated
cooler: h100
case: (prob) cm storm trooper
os: win 7 64
graphics: ?? prob 7970 or 670 could go either not brand loyal, open to suggestions...

I am trying to keep the rig around $2,000 which is almost exactly where these components sit. My inquiry is do I need this MOBO for this build? I plan to do little to no OCing with this setup and will mostly use it for gaming and some video making (youtube and whatnot). I hear that this is a very great MOBO, and would still like something very quality. Any help/advise anywhere else in the rig is also greatly appreciated.

Unless you're doing a lot of rendering, you may be better saving money and getting the 3770k and MSI Z77 mPower. That should save you quite a lot.

As for the processor cooler, SSD and and PSU - they're a little outdated now, so you may be better with the H100i, Corsair Neutron GTX and the AX760i

If it is going to be mostly for gaming I would recommend the 1155 platform, as you will be doing some video editing the 3770k could be a good choice, that with a MSI MPower and you are set, all of the other components look fine, however I wouldn't recommend a Storm Trooper unless you are watercooling

no need for the extreme rampage mobo if ur not going to overclock and you would need the 3930k to do that properly, the extreme is mainly for enthusiasts. so if u really want an ASUS ROG board, go for the rampage IV formula, cheaper, still has all the features and also has a very good on-board sound card.

there isnt a lot of difference with the GPUs at the moment as AMD drivers have meant they have caught up a little so it really depends on what game ur running, some play better on AMD cards, others on Nvidia

the AMDs seem to overclock a bit better but the do use more power than Nvidia cards and run a little hotter in most cases so Nvidia after market cards tend to be quieter as they need less aggressive cooling, so i would go 670 or 660ti which may save u money and still be a beast.

everything else looks fine except for that you may as well get the h100i

welcome to the forums,

the RIVE is an exceptional board, but if you'd looked at some of the posts
you'll understand the following..

gaming/vid edit? then the 3570 (or k) would be exceptional. 2011 unless its a
dedicated editing machine or need monster powe for appz other than gaming.

3570/3770 (or k)
MSI Z77-G45/GD55/GD65
2133 RAM 8 or 16GB
GPU (monitor dependance)

SSD 120GB or more with a HDD for storage
case will be mainly your need for looks. understand that if you later want to challenge
water-cooling, then how "mechanical" do you think you are? because case modding
can be a task.

sorry, i also overlooked your choice of CPU, a 3570k will be better if its just for gaming, the 3930 is not really needed for just gaming

Why 155 over 2011? Is the 2001 overkill or something 'cause I'd like to have more than enough and never need it. Don't the benches have the 2011 over the 1155? Or am I wrong? What about going with the 3820 for now its only $299 now? That will cut about $200, and then go with one of the other 2011 boards that doesn't have the Rampage 4's price tag, (along with the ssd, cooler, and power supply suggestions) another couple hundred there. I guess I just don't get the diff. between 2011 and 1155? Thanks for all the help and patience guys...

1155 is cheaper, and performs just as well for gaming. 2011 is more for editing, or as high end servers. the 3820 isn't worth getting tbh... would be better off with what other had already suggested a 3570k or a 3770k
and a motherboard you can overclock with, like the mpower.

SSD a Samsung 840 pro (size would depend on what your going to sue it for (boot/games) or all up storage.
cooler a h100i instead of the h100
power supply corsair ax760i

The 2011 platform is extreme overkill for gaming, yes its faster but for gaming you won't see much a FPS difference, the 3770 will be perfect for you if you do not plan on OC'ing. Get a MSI gd 65 as well since you again won't be OC'ing..

With the money saved you could get a bigger ssd and maybe 2x 7970s or just a single one, or if your games perfer nvidia get 2x 670s

for the cost difference get the k version.. the overclocking is a free bonus in
performance. the small before cost is a larger recoupe in cost on performance
edge. its not you'll burn it up, or shorten its ten year life cycle, or make the magic
smoke come out.. small steps in overclocking go along way in gaming performances.

To summarise, 2011 is better than 1155, HOWEVER you will not see the difference in the area you will be using it. And certainly not worth the extra cash for your needs when you could put it else where to boost gaming performance (ie GPU).

Looks like a great build, although with the h100 you might as well get the h100i for a very small amount more. i did see it on aria the other day for £88. its worth the upgrade even though i do find it a little noisy.

You guys are very knowledgeable and persuasive, you have convinced me to go 1155 and juice up the GPU. I guess I was just wanting something to kill my AMD fan-boy friends. Thank you all for your time and advise. Maybe Ill post up when shes finished.

Ethier intel pays reviewers or amd paid this guy... I never trusted this guys videos, doesn't seem very knowledgeable to be honest.

This is the stuff that gets me, this guy did some tests and he comes up the other way with the AMD systems and I will be building one of these 1155 3770k systems soon. whats your take?
wouldn't really trust a single review, watch many reviews and research yourself.
myself, i wouldn't buy an 8 core, im a gamer and i used to be an fan of amd, some of these processors were very good currently that has been lacking.

My advice is aviod amd at the moment. The most cost effective build for u would be a 3570k, i know u said u dont want to overclock but a simple auto overclock from the bios with 1 click will give u better performance for gaming, it will give u extra fps.

Pair that up with a 670 with 8 - 16gb ram and you'll be set. U could go for the asus rog formula or the other asus z77 boards which are all good and wont affect your gaming experience whichever u choose. other good boards are the gigabyte z77 boards or the asrock extreme 4 or 6

Add an ssd drive and you'll have a great gaming rig as long as u overclock the cpu, whether it is the i5 or i7, an overclock will improve ur fps, more so than overclocking the actual gpu.
