Once you get into the high-refresh sphere, it's impossible to go back. Knock on wood, I've had good luck with dead pixels, as I don't have any on the 5 screens that I own.

If you have cardboard laying around, you could cut pieces of that up for quick and dirty measurements. I've seen lots of guys use cardboard to get the dimensions for little boxes, etc.
