We don't recommend that people put ATA passwords...

We don't recommend that people put ATA passwords on their drives in case they forget the password (thus losing the data forever). Is this for the Maximus VII Formula? Windows 8/10?

Very strange - intermittent faults are the worst! It does sound like connection-based issues are to blame, but why that would be affected by it being plugged into the mains I don't know.

Windows 10 drivers for sound cards like the Phoebus as far as I understand are in development. Sound cards have a pretty long shelf life compared to most other PC...

Have you made sure the M.2 option is enabled in Advanced -> PCH Storage in BIOS? Just check you don't have SATA express enabled instead or something.
