Heya guys!

With the recent update in the news section, which requires your threads to follow some guidelines and approval by a moderator we have noticed that there are only a few people left who post news items as most users just don't feel like writing a small essay every time they find an interesting or funny news story.

That's why we're now introducing the Quick News thread. So far, this is a bit of an experiment for which you, the OC3D members are responsible. If things don't really work out (i.e people start posting nothing but off-site links) the thread might be closed and/or removed.

-------------

Now, as with the regular news threads, there are a few rules:

- Don't post just one (off-site) link. Your post will be removed.

- Anyone can take your small update and turn it into its own, full news item thread.

- If you found the information on another site/newspaper/social media, be sure to include a source (link).

- If you post big news updates ie
1) A new Intel socket or CPU line-up.
2) AMDs next gen GPUs.
3) Tiny Tom Logan found streaking in London.
These will be written up by the team like their lives depended on it, please dont take offense ;)

- If your post is spotted by OC3D staff and is made into an article, credit will be given to the Forum user who posted about it first. Please note that credit will not be given if OC3D staff discover any news stories or topics before seeing it in quick news.

- Do not go too far off-topic. If this happens, the moderators might select the off-topic posts, starting with the news update post and place them in their own thread. This might be a News thread, but could also be placed in the appropriate forum section (for instance Cases & Power).

-------------

If you find a YouTube video that speaks for itself, like the Phanteks case videos, it is okay to just post that but maybe it's a nice idea to include your personal thoughts or favourite features. However, please limit the amount of reviews that are not affiliated to OC3D. This is a review site after all. :)

Feel free to post some news updates here when you don't feel like typing out an entire thread for a small/funny news item. It's up to you guys if this thread stays so behave a little ;)

Example post

Corsair introduce Carbide Air 240 case

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLT-rAfpUcs

Corsair have just just announced a smaller version of Air 540 for µATX and ITX builds. It has the same dual-chamber design and watercooling support and it comes it black and white! :D I think it looks pretty awesome. Who's getting one?

So I have to place all my news finding here from now on then?

So I have to place all my news finding here from now on then?

No no, this is for quick news articles.

If you're happy to write a full article like you and others have been doing, then please carry on.

This is more for people for don't have the time to write up an article themselves, but still wish to share stories - ie, just a link to a youtube video and saying 'this is cool'.

We'll see how it goes over the next few days/weeks, and it if starts detracting from full articles then this thread will be closed.

It's more just that we've noticed people have been put off from posting full news articles due to the new conditions, and it's really only yourself, WYP and Dicehunter posting in the news section. We're hoping this will encourage a few more people to share news.

Intel Corp believes the worst is over for a personal computer industry hammered by the mobile revolution.

The Santa Clara, California chipmaker forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street's expectations today, sending its stock 4 per cent higher in extended trade.

"PCs have stabilized," Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters after Intel's report. He said he expects shrinking demand from consumers in China and other developing countries to rebound, just as it recently has in the United States.

From the end of 2010, the year the iPad was launched, to the end of 2013, annual global PC shipments shrank a total of 12 per cent, according to IDC.

Intel now expects the market's recovery to help it grow its full-year revenue about 5 per cent, slightly higher than prior expectations.

Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich told analysts on a conference call that improved demand from companies replacing old PCs would last at least through the end of 2014.

Also today, Intel increased its share buyback program by $20 billion. It plans to repurchase about $4 billion of stock in the current quarter, underscoring its confidence in a turnaround and a growing crop of "two in one" devices with detachable keyboards and screens.

"My presumption would be that if they’re confident enough to boost it that they see this (PC market) upside maintaining," Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said. "God help them if they’re wrong."

Intel said in a statement it expects third-quarter revenue of $14.4 billion, plus or minus $500 million. Analysts had expected $14 billion on average, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue from Intel's PC group rose 6 percent in the quarter while its data centre group, a big contributor to gross margins, had revenue jump 19 per cent.

Intel has made little progress expanding from the PC industry into chips for smartphones and tablets. For the second quarter, Intel said its mobile and communications group's revenue fell 83 per cent to $51 million and had an operating loss of $1.12 billion.

Intel's second-quarter revenue was $13.8 billion, compared with $12.8 billion in the year-ago quarter. In June, Intel revised increased its second-quarter revenue outlook to $13.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, citing stronger-than-expected demand for PCs used by businesses. Intel posted second-quarter net income of $2.8 billion, or 55 cents a share, compared with $2.0 billion, or 39 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Intel shares closed up 0.70 per cent at $31.71 in regular trade on Nasdaq.

A French blogger has been sentenced by a French judge to pay a €1500 compensation fine to a restaurant about which she wrote a bad review. This review would show up too high in the Google search results.

The French woman wrote about the restaurant on her blog after having a bad experience and thus created a negative review. Since then, said page of her blog has climbed up in the Google search results and was now the #4 result when you Googled for Restaurant 'Il Giardino'.

The owner of the restaurant stated that since the review, a lot has changed in the restaurant and thus the review is no longer relevant, but still does damage to the business because it shows up so high in Google with a title that states that the blogger would 'recommend everyone to avoid this restaurant'.

As a result, the owner has gone to court, which has sentenced the woman to change the title of her review and pay a fine of a whopping €1500, most likely based on the recent 'Right to be forgotten (http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27394751)'. The woman decided to remove the review completely.

Looking back on this, the owner has shot himself in the foot big time. After reading the news article, countless of people have gone and posted negative reviews about the business. Google reviews is currently sat at 175 reviews with an average of 1.3 out of 5 stars. https://plus.google.com/113947815154047603176/about?gl=nl&hl=nl

Welcome to the internet.

AMD Pirate Islands Radeon R9 300 Series
by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 04/10/2014 08:42 AM | Source | 38 comment(s) ]

The colleagues over at WccfTech posted something about the next generation Radeon graphics cards. They dug up an old (what is claimed to be) roadmap which shows details about three GPUs, the R9 390X, R9 380X and R9 370X. There is no validation regarding the source material and their post is highly speculative. Then again .. rumors always start somewhere and props to them for retrieving that info.

Now in their news item posted they already claim themselves that all information is to be taken with a pinch of salt, which really is the proper way to address this information.

The source leak indicates future Pirate Islands GPU code names and some specs. Specs NEVER are final which makes me frown up-on the posted material, anyway here's what they are claiming:

--

According to these details all GPUs will be based on the TSMC 20nm Node and will be true Pirate Island cores, which is why nomenclature of the dies will be derivative in nature. Another thing mentioned is that all Pirate Island GPUs will have the DirectX 12 Hardware Feature Set. According to these details the R9 370X is slated for announcement/arrival sometime this July-August this year. The R9 370X will feature a ‘Treasure Island XTX’ core and supposedly has 1536 Stream-processors, 96 Texture Units and 48 ROPs on the uncut die. Of course this road-map precedes the report we got of TSMC having a little trouble with 20nm so I am not sure how valid the time frame is anymore.

Now according to the details, we will see the R9 390X before the R9 380X. The R9 390X will feature the ‘Bermuda XTX’ core and feature a staggeringly high number of SPs, ie. 4224. The Texture Unit count is 264 with 96 ROPs. It is slated to show up late 2014 around November or so. Once again keep in mind the TSMC comment above. Finally the R9 380X which will feature the ‘Fiji XTX’ core and the following die configuration: 3072 SPs, 192 Texture Units and 72 ROPs and should appear sometime early 2015. Now interestingly the R9 390X ‘Bermuda XTX’ GPU is slated to have 512 Bits of Memory Bandwidth while as the R9 380X is slated to have 384 Bits with the R9 370X coming last with 256 Bits. Now the road-map even hints at the clock speeds of AMD’s future GPUs but I think it is prudent to mention that all these tech specs at this point in time are about as solid as the wind. However let us continue, with the help of this table:

GPU Codename Core Stream Processors* Texture Units* ROPs* Core Clock* Memory Clock* Memory Bandwidth*
R9 370X Treasure Island Treasure Island XTX 1536 96 48 ~900Mhz ~5Ghz 256Bit
R9 380X Fiji Fiji XTX 3072 192 72 ~900Mhz ~6Ghz 384Bit
R9 390X Bermuda Bermuda XTX 4224 264 96 ~1000Mhz ~7Ghz 512Bit

Earlier today Evleaks (https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/490097670930059265)(source), a regular when it comes to unofficially announcing things in the smartphone world, has posted an image online of a smartwatch that could potentially be made by HTC.

Judging from the way the (what seems to be the) homescreen is laid out, we can see that this is very similar to that on the HTC One series mobile devices, all based on Android OS.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bs0tPCKIAAAQU9n.png:large

According to Evleaks, this watch will also run on the OS made by Google, Android Wear to be more specific. He also stated that the image is most likely not a pre-production render, but an artist reproduction which means that the render would be based on the actual appearence of the smartwatch.

If you're a person who likes the Sims this is great news. Or bad if you've bought all the dlc as it is now free for life (http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-get-the-sims-2-ultimate-collection/)! The Ultimate collection includes all the DLC. Even that ikea one. The catch? You have to download origin. Obviously not everyone is into games like these (I'm not a huge fan myself) I though it was neat enough to share.

Instructions:
Because you’re a passionate The Sims 2 player, we’re making The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection available free of charge to download to your Origin library. To add the game, just follow these steps:
Start by downloading and installing Origin. If you already have Origin you can skip to step 3.
Not an Origin member? Create a free Origin Account to get in the game.
Launch Origin and log into your Origin Account.
From the ‘Games’ tab in the Origin menu, select ‘Redeem Product Code’ and enter the code
I-LOVE-THE-SIMS
If you’re already an Origin member, you can also redeem your code online. Just visit the Origin code redemption page and log in to your Origin Account. Then enter I-LOVE-THE-SIMS in the ‘Product Code’ field.

Log into Origin and download and play the game any time you want .

Thanks for being a passionate The Sims fan, and enjoy your copy of The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection.

This is until the 31st of July. I'm getting it as my sister is a big fan and I enjoy Sim slaughtering.

Sony Xperia Z3 images

Twitter user @Evleaks (https://twitter.com/evleaks) has recently posted two new images, which appear to be the shell/casing of the new Sony Xperia Z3. He also added
Sony Xperia Z3 (D6653): SD801 (2.4GHz x4), Adreno 330, 5.15" @ 1080p, 3GB/16GB,

Meaning that the phone will more than likely run a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC @ 2.4GHz with 3GB of RAM and 16GB ROM. It will also feature a 5.15" full HD screen which is ever so slightly smaller than the 5.2" display on the Xperia Z2.

Motorola to sell 'tattoos' to unlock your Moto X

Motorola has announced a 'digital tattoo' that lets you unlock your Moto X device without using a code. You just hold the phone against the chip and it unlocks itself.

The tattoo is actually an rfid-chip that works together with an app on the phone. When the chip and phone come in contact, using NFC, the phone will automatically unlock.

There are some drawbacks however, the chip can only be used for 5 days, after that you need a new one. Motorola has stated that they will sell the chips in batches of 10, for $10. Meaning that you can use one package for almost 2 months (5 x 10 = 50 days) and you'll end up paying slighty more than $5 dollars a month for this feature.

The tattoo is not compatible with the Moto G and Moto E devices, as they do not support NFC.

GOOGLE has bought out Twitch for 1 Billion

Google has signed a deal to buy game-livestreaming firm Twitch (http://www.twitch.tv) for $1 billion, confirmed sources familiar with the matter.
We don’t know everything about this deal, such as when it will be announced and the exact purchase price. We do know that Twitch investors who participated in past rounds are pleased that they will be getting significant returns that are multiple times the amount they originally invested. The deal underscores the value of live Internet streaming and the rise of competitive gaming as a spectator sport — something that draws millions of viewers (http://venturebeat.com/2014/06/03/a-marketers-dream-league-of-legends-dota-2-help-e-sports-rack-up-2-4-billion-viewer-hours-in-2013/), can offer prize pools that surpass pro golf’s marquee events (http://venturebeat.com/2014/05/20/valves-dota-2-championship-has-the-biggest-e-sports-prize-pool-ever-at-6m-and-its-still-growing/), and provides a multibillion dollar opportunity for advertisers.
Google and Twitch declined comment. Both companies happen to be speaking at our GamesBeat 2014 (http://events.venturebeat.com/event/gamesbeat2014/) event in September. This deal was first cited by unnamed sources from Variety said (http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/youtube-to-acquire-videogame-streaming-service-twitch-for-1-billion-sources-1201185204/) back in May that Google had made an all-cash offer and that the deal could be announced soon.
Google’s YouTube division is reportedly in charge of the acquisition, which would represent a significant transformation of YouTube’s business. Google acquired YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

Wikipedia blocks US Congress from editing

Thursday, July 24th, Wikipedia administrators have decided to block all IP addresses coming from the US Congress from making changes to Wikipedia articles after one or multiple anonymous user(s) persistently kept posting 'disrupting edits'.

The edits were made to articles about politicians and businesses, but also the page about the assassination on former US president John F. Kennedy. A biography article about former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld was edited to state that he was an "alien lizard who eats Mexican babies".

One staffer stated that they were all being banned for the "actions of two or three". This is not the first time that this happened. IP addresses from the House of Representatives have been banned before, when similar edits were being made. It also happened in the UK; When the BBC discovered that the phrase "all Muslims are terrorists" was added to an article about veils, by users of UK government computers.

The recent edits were discovered when an automated twitter account, @congressedits, which automatically tweets whenever a member of the US government edits a Wikipedia article, brought to light that changes were being made.

A few of the edits:

1- The page about the assassination of John F. Kennedy was alltered to say that Lee Harvey Oswald was "acting on behalf of the regime of Fidel Castro".

2- The article about the moon landing conspiracy theories was edited to say that "they were promoted by the Cuban government".

3- Nataliya Vitrenko's, a Ukrainian politician, page was changed to claim that she was "a Russian puppet".

The edit that brought Wikipedia administrators to finally ban anonymous edits from Congress was made on the entry of media news site Mediaite, stating that the blog was "sexist transphobic" and "they automatically assume that someone is male without any evidence". Mediaite had published an article about rogue edits from congressional computers in the past.

The ban will be lifted after 10 days.

It would appear that the rumors about Gamescom had the general gist correct because the GTX 880 is set for a paper launch in mid-september in an Nvidia hosted event. The information comes from the reliable Videocardz.com and fits in with the overall scheme of things that we have been hearing about. The actual launch and the time when you can get your hands on the GTX 880 is Late September or Early October, approximately the same time frame which we revealed to you one week back.Maxwell-GTX-880-

Nvidia Geforce GTX 880 Paper Launching in Mid September – Actual Launch by Early October

Lets start with the facts first. You would recall that we originally gave you an Oct/Nov timeframe for the GTX 880, something we later narrowed down to Early October. This timeframe has now been confirmed by VCZ’s mole as well. We also told you that the GTX 870 will be landing in Early October as well with the GTX 860 following in Late October. Though VCZ’s mole failed to mention this, it is none the less true. The rest of the things mentioned have already been revealed by us before, so I wont go into much detail there. It would appear that initially the GTX 880 is going to ship with just 4GB of GDDR5 memory with the 8GB configurations shipping later (and costing more ofcourse).

While VCZ speculates at a price of $450-$400, unless Nvidia has suddenly developed a very charitable heart, we would speculate at a price of around $499. Nvidia has followed this tactic since the G92 for flagship cards. Unless ofcourse, there is something drastically different this time. Which, could be the fact that the GTX 880, the apparent flagship, is only a placeholder for the real flagship to come. VC also states that the GTX 880 is set to replace the GTX 770 (this does not mean that the GTX 880 is equivalent in power to the 770 contrary to popular belief) so that leaves the GTX 780 and GTX 780 Ti to be replaced by the GM200. In that case a cheap GTX 880 would make sense. However, since we don’t have any authenticated leaks in the performance department we will leave that till the time comes.

Steamroller based Athlon
The new processors are aimed at the FM2+ and AM3+ platforms, the Athlon chip will be the fastest Athlon series processor in AMD’s lineup while the FX-8300 is a 95W chip with a sub-$150 price. Just yesterday, we also revealed that AMD has two other Athlon processors which have been listed are the Athlon X4 840 and Athlon X2 450.The Athlon X4 840 is a quad core processor featuring a 3.4 GHz clock speed, 2 MB L2 cache, 95W TDP while the Athlon X2 450 is a dual core steamroller based processor of which details are not known at the moment.
The AMD Athlon X4 860K processor codenamed as the Athlon X4 860K “AD860KXBI44JAA” will be the flagship part replacing the Athlon X4 760K from last year. The steamroller based Quad Core chip features four threads, 3.7 GHz clock speed, 2 MB L2 cache and a 95W TDP. The boost clock is not known but considering the A10-7850K which is also a 3.7 GHz clocked chip jumps to 4.0 GHz in boost mode, we can see a similar boost clock for the Athlon X4 860K.

At least they changed the title of that article. That had it written in quite a mis-leading way indicating that there was a Steamroller FX-8370 on the way, when it's just an FX-8350 with slightly higher clocks.

Wccftech isn't exactly a reliable source of information though, have a look here for a reason why. They took this pretty seriously, hilarious. :D

With the latest report stating Apple's long-awaited new iPhones will be unveiled on September 9, the speculation machine has kicked up a gear and everyone is wondering what we'll see when Tim Cook pulls back the curtain.

While nothing is certain, months of rumours have painted a fairly reliable picture of not one, but two bigger, prettier iPhones. So here are the answers to some common questions surrounding what to expect.

Why are people so sure there'll be a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch screen size?

Since Japanese newspaper Famitsu first reported the two screen sizes in March - citing a source at a local display manufacturer - the figures have shown up in virtually every iPhone 6 rumour. The original report said the release could be staggered, with the larger 5.5-inch model being released after its smaller brother. Subsequent reports have echoed this.

It's not like Apple to announce a device without immediate launch plans, but reports of manufacturing issues for the 5.5-inch iPhone could also be a factor in a staggered launch. The larger displays also make sense given their huge popularity in Asian markets and almost standard five-inch to 5.5-inch screens of Android phones. The iPhone 5 screen is only four inches.

So when will I be able to get the iPhone 6?

Assuming Apple takes the same approach as last time, an iPhone announced on September 9 will be available 10 days later, on September 19.

Will it be called the iPhone 6?

It seems likely given the company's recent naming conventions, with major revisions earning a new number (iPhone 4, iPhone 5) and smaller refinements or offshoots getting a letter (iPhone 4S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S ).

What hardware improvements are we likely to see?

Famitsu's original report said the iPhone 6 screen would be "significantly" higher in resolution than that of the iPhone 5S (which is 1136 x 640). This makes sense if the screen is larger and Apple wants to maintain its trademark "retina display" pixel density. A resolution of 1704 x 960 would be needed to give a 5.5-inch screen roughly the same pixel density of an iPhone 5, so expect that at least.

A better battery is almost a no-brainer. One report from AppleInsider claims new battery technology will allow the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to achieve a 15 per cent improvement in performance over the iPhone 5S. Anyone wishing for a heavier 2500 mAh battery or a swappable battery, both features of Samsung's Galaxy S5, are likely to be disappointed as various sources point to the new iPhone being slimmer and sleeker than the last.

Expect obligatory improvements to the camera, processor and possibly the speakers as well, and don't be surprised if Apple finally makes the leap to including a near-field communication (NFC) chip on its phone to allow for mobile payments.

What about software?

You've already heard all about iOS 8, which will be launching with the new phones. Expect to hear more about health initiatives, connected-home features and what, if anything, has come of Apple's purchase of headphone brand Beats.

Will the new phone be hardier than previous iPhones?

One of the most persistent rumours has been that iPhone 6 will be covered in near-indestructible sapphire glass. Several online videos purported to show users bending, stabbing, scratching and hitting these displays to prove their worth. However while sapphire will still be used for the camera lens and home button, analysts recently said there had not been enough sapphire glass in the manufacturing supply chain to indicate the phone will be covered in it.

Some are adamant at least one of the iPhone models will use a full sapphire glass screen which, taken with the rumours about one phone releasing after the other, could point to a regular 4.7-inch iPhone followed by a premium, 5.5-inch, indestructible iPhone.

Will we see the iWatch on September 9?

Unlikely. If Apple is indeed having an iPhone event on September 9 (and if the past is any indication) they'll keep it focused on iPhones.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 “Maxwell” Specifications Analysis – 13 SMM Units With 2nd Generation 1644 CUDA Cores, Performance
Quote:
The specifications of NVIDIA (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/mfrList.php?mfrid=451&campaign=social/forum/textlink)’s upcoming Maxwell based GeForce GTX 870 have been leaked Coolaler and we already covered the basic details of the card in another article which can be seen here. The NVIDIA Maxwell based GeForce GTX 870 graphics card is one of the three SKUs arriving to consumers in the upcoming months (September and October).GeForce GTX 870 / GeForce GTX 880 MakeUp

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 “Maxwell” Specifications Analysis

Last time, I did the analysis of the leaked GeForce GTX 880 PCB which was in engineering state and found out some intriguing details such as the 256-Bit memory bus, the GM204 chip being larger than GK104 while being based on the current 28nm process node. We didn’t get to see any specifications of the card itself aside from a few details we were able to gather from the pictures. Today, we have a different sort of leak in the form of a screenshot which shows the GPU-z program running parallel to a 3DMark 11 score of an unknown graphics card.
The leaker from the main source has mentioned that the graphics card in question is NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 870 which is the skimmed down variant of the GeForce GTX 880 graphics which will be available to consumers in the upcoming months. The GeForce GTX 870 boasts the second generation Maxwell architecture and will feature the GM204 core architecture which will become the foundation of the flagship GeForce GTX 880 too. The GeForce GTX 860 is also expected to launch in Q4 2014 but it isn’t expected whether the card will feature GM204 core or the GM206 core but let’s forget that for a moment and focus on the details we have in hands.
The GeForce GTX 870 has the Device Id “NVIDIA D17U-20″ and the GPU Id for the graphics core is 13C2. We have our own speculation regarding that but before we get into that, let’s denote the entire specifications listed on the GPU-z panel. The GM204 SKU featured on the GeForce GTx 870 fuses 1664 CUDA Cores on the die along with 32 ROPs and 138 TMUs. From the first generation Maxwell core architecture, we learned that a Maxwell SMM (Streaming Multiprocessor Maxwell) unit has 128 cores compared to 192 on the current generation Kepler SMX units. Along with that, we have a 4 GB GDDR5 memory running across a 256-Bit memory interface clocked at 1753 MHz (7.00 GHz Effective) which pumps out 224.4 GB/s bandwidth. The core clock is maintained at 1051 MHz and 1178 MHz boost clock something which I was expecting if the cards were to be able to take on the GK110 core based graphics cards. Lastly, we have the fill rate numbers which amount to 33.6 GPixels/s Pixel and 145.0 GTexels/s Texture fill rates.
Now as you may remember, the first generation Maxwell core architecture which is featured on the GM107 GPU has 2 times the performance per watt and the CUDA Cores, even though lower amount to more performance that is rated at 135% of the past generation. The key word here is first generation, since NVIDIA just previewed what their Maxwell architecture is capable of and having ample time for optimizing and enhancing the architecture, I expect to see better numbers being rated at 145-150% and we can see more power efficiency on the new cards. The GeForce GTX 750 Ti which is NVIDIA’s entry level Maxwell offering is rated at 64W and comes with splendid performance for its wattage. Considering the updated design, I think there’s no doubt that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 will be able to trump the GeForce GTX 780 in performance (although not by a big margin).

The GPU name is also interesting since 13C2 could probably mean 13 SMM units which are featured on the GPU which makes us think about the GeForce GTX 880. With a SMM or two in place, we can see the GeForce GTX 880 include 1792 or 1920 cores which although lower than the GK110 based cards is reasonably higher than what was featured on the GK104 chips and with the performance per core leverage, we can see the GeForce GTX 880 right next to the GeForce GTX 780 Ti in performance numbers. The GM200 is still far away from launch and is expected next year but that just gives a glimpse of what to expect from the daddy core which can easily topple the flagship chips.

The core count and configuration for the GeForce GTX 880 looks around right since looking at the trend in the table provided below, you can note that the skimmed down *70 graphics card has generally one or two SM units disabled. The GK110 is the only chip in the line which has more chips disabled but that is due to the extended lineup due to which we had several cards in this line aka GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX Titan (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/mfrList.php?mfrid=346&campaign=social/forum/textlink), GeForce GTX 780 Ti, GeForce GTX Titan Black (all of which are configured around the same core). In case there will be a higher SM units SKU, then NVIDIA will most definitely launch it as a Ti part as was rumored by a few sources a while back. If there are more disabled SMMs, then NVIDIA will launch them as a different card rather than releasing a 4 SMM disabled part
The 4 GB GDDR5 route seems to be the reference route for NVIDIA this time around moving onwards from a 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM configuration on several Kepler cards. The chips will still be configured around a 256-Bit bus but this just seems to be the route for graphics makers these days considering AMD (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/mfrList.php?mfrid=3&campaign=social/forum/textlink) is going this route with their next performance chip, codenamed Tonga (Radeon R9 285) which is considered faster than the Tahiti but has a 256-Bit memory bus compared to 384-Bit on Tahiti based Radeon R9 280 series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 Leaked Performance Numbers:

The performance numbers of the GeForce GTX 870 are interesting considering they are really close to the GeForce GTX 780. The card was tested with a Intel (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/mfrList.php?mfrid=4&campaign=social/forum/textlink) Core i7-4820K CPU and is currently a test sample so final performance updates and drivers are not in place considering the GPU-z couldn’t even recognize the card properly until the database is updated. In the 3DMark 11 Performance and Extreme modes, the GeForce GTX 870 was able to score P11919 points and X4625 marks respectively. A GeForce GTX 780 on the other hand on average scores around X4500 points and P12000 points. With the GeForce GTX 870 still optimized and without any sort of official drivers, I say these numbers are good considering this card will retail at $349 US and get you performance on par or better than a card based on a flagship chip from current generation.

NVIDIA Maxwell GM107 Architecture

The NVIDIA Maxwell GM107 architecture is most clearly built from scratch yet looks like an hybrid of both Kepler and Fermi. The SMM or Streaming Multiprocessor of Maxwell will replace the SMX of Kepler and each of the smm are assembled into four blocks yet are defined as part of a single SMM which means the core architecture has got quite dense with Maxwell. Each of these blocks hold 32 CUDA cores so a single SMM with four of these operation units results in 128 CUDA cores. The SMM has 128 CUDA cores compared to 192 CUDA cores on the SMX.
The GM107 GPC ‘Graphics Processing Cluster’ consists of five of these streaming multiprocessors which are connected to a Raster Engine. Each SMM consists of Polymorph Engine 2.0 which includes the Vertex Fetch, Tessellator, Viewport transform, attribute setup and stream output. Each SMM has 8 texture mapping units which equates to 40 on the whole chip and 16 ROPs while connected to two 64-bit memory controllers.
There’s also a handful of cache on Maxwell which is 2 MB in total compared to 256 KB on Kepler GK107 which reduces GPU queuing. IPCC has been increased on the GPU core and balancing improvement to workload has been done. NVIDIA has improved their H.264 encoding and decoding with NVENC on Maxwell so that would result in better performance in ShadowPlay technology and improved sleep states have been implemented to reduce power input while the GPU is running idle. All of this is packed in a die which measures 148mm2 which means transistor density has been upped by 15% on the same 28nm process design.

http://uk.pcmag.com/news/34836/intel-moores-law-still-ticking-with-14nm-broadwell

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. —Moore's Law keeps ticking along and Intel's latest batch of computer chips, processors code named Broadwell and designed for fanless systems like tablets and 2-in-1s, cram more transistors into a smaller, thinner package than ever before.

The key to Broadwell, which will first roll out in System-on-a-Chip (SoC) products dubbed Core M, is Intel's successful ramp of its next-generation 14-nanometer process technology for fabricating microprocessors. The chip giant has lagged a little bit behind its traditional, "tick-tock" pace in getting 14nm up and running, but Intel's Broadwell team on Monday announced that "Broadwell Y" parts are now being produced at volume at Intel fabs in Oregon and Arizona, with a third 14nm fab scheduled to come on line in Ireland in 2015.

Intel said the first products using Core M SoCs built by its OEM partners will arrive on shelves this holiday season. More PCs and devices using other upcoming Broadwell-based chipsets will show up throughout 2015, the company said.

Broadwell is being billed as a major step forward for Intel, and will perhaps have more impact than the typical Moore's Law-driven "tick," or die shrink, which is accomplished every couple of years in keeping with the company's product roadmap cadence.

Intel Intel 14nm Manufacturing ProcessAt Intel's campus here in the heart of Silicon Valley, the brains behind Broadwell emphasized the system-wide innovations that had to be made to get the powerful, x86-based Core microarchitecture to function in fanless designs. It has been a "multi-year journey," said Rani Borkar, a vice president in Intel's Platform Engineering Group. It's no secret that the company has struggled to compete in the consumer tablet market as ultra-thin fanless designs have relied on ultra-low power ARM chips over Intel's x86 processors.

Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst for Moor Insights & Strategy, said Broadwell could be a game-changer for Intel in the tablet and 2-in-1 market.

"Intel has really pulled it all together on 14nm. They are delivering full PC performance, day-long battery life, tablet-thin, and fanless feature sets. It was a tough journey getting there as they needed to invent things along the way, but they made it," Moorhead said.

The analyst predicted that "the biggest market impact from Intel's 14nm Broadwell will be the widespread availability of fanless 2-in-1s and tablets that are less than 9mm thin, but with full PC performance."

In fact, Intel had a Broadwell-based 2-in-1 reference design on hand Monday, which measured just 7.2mm—remarkably thin, considering it packed in a fully featured Core M chip inside, powering Windows 8.1 Professional.

So how did Intel finally get to the place where it can make Core products that run cool enough to be used in fanless slates and 2-in-1s, while also extending battery life and providing full-blown, x86-driven performance levels?

For starters, just by shrinking down and further optimizing its second-generation Tri-Gate (FinFET) transistors from the previous generation of 22nm chips known as Haswell, Intel was able to reduce the power draw of its Broadwell processors by 25 percent while providing the same performance as Haswell.

But Intel Fellow Stephan Jourdan, director of system-on-chip architecture in the company's Platform Engineering Group, explained that his team didn't stop there. Intel was also able to attain a 10 percent power reduction from 22nm designs by aggressively reducing leakage, as well as another 20 percent reduction via other design optimizations and reduced variation in Broadwell processors.

Intel 14nm Manufacturing ProcessThe next-generation SoCs were also optimized for low-voltage performance and an extremely low idle power draw—to the tune of a 10 percent improvement over the Haswell generation.

The new process technology is Intel's second go-round at Tri-Gate, meaning the chip giant will be shipping its second generation of chips using three-dimensional FinFET transistors while its competition is still producing processors using traditional, planar transistors, Intel Senior Fellow Mark Bohr said.

The improvements Intel made to its Tri-Gate process, changes that provide a considerable boost the performance-per-watt of Broadwell chips, are complex. Bohr explained that in simple terms, Intel made the "fins" of its second-generation Tri-Gate transistors taller but skinnier, while reducing the space between them and shrinking the circuitry in its on-chip memory cells as well.

"There are three possible benefits you get from scaling transistors and improving them. You can get higher performance, you can get a reduction of active power, but the key benefit is better performance per watt," Bohr said.

The end result for Intel is the new Core M lineup of SoCs, which come in a processor package that's significantly smaller in area and height than the Haswell chips it succeeds.

Intel also made it clear that it sees the projections for smaller and cheaper transistors enshrined in Moore's Law as holding up for several more process technology generations. That confidence and Intel's development of chips capable of supporting various new user interfaces were "the big takeaways for me," said Tim Bajarin, principal analyst for Creative Strategies.

"Moore's law is alive and well and could be extended at least another decade," Bajarin said. "I talked to Intel Chairman Andy Bryant and he says that they are already working on 10nm and could extend this [FinFET technology] to 7nm and 5nm in the future."

"The result of these new chips will be that they will be much more powerful and yet still allow for serious innovation in mobile designs," he continued. "Also, while touch, mice, and trackpads drive the UIs of today, the future UIs will be voice, gesture, 3D modeling, and AI, driven even in mobile devices and that will require a lot more processing power in the future."

DayZ is coming to consoles.

Low end AMD apu and DayZ? what a giggle.
"When we were considering console versions, we were acutely aware of how important the PC version is to us," Hall said on-stage. "We didn't want to just port DayZ, but to develop the game to each platform's strengths. Commitment to the Playstation 4 version has given us cause to expand the parameters of the overall project, providing benefit to the existing PC early access."

Hall pointed to the provision of 64-bit servers as one such example of the increased scope of the project, and also announced a visual overhaul. "We're now committed to developing an entirely new cross-platform renderer to bring amazing new visuals to the game," he said. "Through an adaptable approach and development environment, this addition will allow not only Playstation 4 owners to get into DayZ, but it will improve all DayZ player experiences."

New Windows 8.1 Update on Tuesday is causing PCs to no longer boot.

The following updates are the cause of the issue so if possible remove them.

KB2982791
KB2975719

The problem seems to begin after you have rebooted twice after updating the lastest releases.

Users can perform a system restore to solve this but for those who have this disabled may suffer most.

AMD are cutting the FX's RRP in September. You'll be able to pick up a 9590 for £175, which is pretty decent considering if those 8 cores are used it'll be significantly faster. Still, the cooling won't be cheap and you'll need to spend to get a motherboard that supports it.

the 6300 will be £70 as well, which is actually a good deal. Its not a bad cpu.

All the hype in the TV industry has centred around curved panels for the last few years. Isn't it about time that the immersive screen tech trickled-down to monitors? LG thinks so, and as a result, it will be bringing a curved monitor to this year's IFA tech conference in Berlin.

That's right, LG is making monitors bendy with a new, curved, 34-inch monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio. LG says it's designed for "professional users and home entertainment enthusiasts". Ok then.

The new curved monitor will pack in a don't-call-it-4K qHD resolution of 3440x1440, and will also support Thunderbolt 2 for data transfer speeds that will make you weep. It's also carrying a 7W stereo speaker system just in case you need that sort of thing.

But wait, there's more.

LG will also be debuting its new gaming monitor at the annual European tech conference.

The new LG 24GM77 gaming monitor will feature a fast 144Hz refresh rate for a smoother visual experience in fast-paced games, and a gaming mode that LG dubs Dynamic Action Sync. Dynamic Action Sync promises to cut input lag enabling a smoother experience in fast-paced scenes.

It's interesting that LG has decided to invent its own smoothing mode and not go with NVIDIA's G-Sync technology designed to eliminate screen tearing for gamers. Mind you, G-Sync is good for smoothing out 60Hz-100Hz monitors. LG's new monitor supports a 144Hz refresh rate, which means that tearing and jagged graphics aren't going to be a massive issue. We'll have to see what the new Dynamic Action Sync is like when we go eyes-on in September.

The new gaming monitor will also include a "Black Stabiliser" for a consistent black level across different game modes, as well as other customised presets tied to a monitor-bound hotkey.

(That header image on the Gizmodo article is so poorly Photoshopped)

When curved TVs came around I though it was bull. If you didn't sit straight in front of them, at a certain distance, the viewing angles would be awkward and just not work.

I was very quickly to jump to the same conclusion when I heard about this last night, but when I thought about it, monitors make a lot more sense. You usually only look at them alone, and should sit straight in front of it.

The neck pains in triple monitor set-ups though :p

Its perfect for me as I have a tiny desk. Shame its not a 1080p one as one 780ti won't have the grunt to get acceptable frames from that higher res.
(for those who know Tom's desks. Its basically one of those corner modules).

Wouldn't it be cool if they made a set of 3 monitors specifally for using all 3 but they are curved in a way it looks natural? That would be awesome(and expensive).

Something interesting I'd like to mention here is that Newegg US has listed a number of the new DDR4 G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB and 32GB kits and is actually shipping them out already instead of holding off until the 29th like they are with the other brands. While they have not offered the 3000MHz kits, the kits currently on sale are selling quickly and have mostly sold out now. All that remains are 16GB and 32GB kits rated at 2133MHz.

As a side note, I managed to purchase a 16GB 2600MHz kit for my Hushboat build prior to them selling out. Anyone else notice and/or take advantage of this? Not like there's too much of a point, as the kits realistically can't be used until the motherboards and processors launch, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Twitter user @evleaks (https://twitter.com/evleaks) is 'retiring', or at least from leaking images on his Twitter account with over 180.000 followers. Evleaks was famous for leaking images of unreleased/announced smartphones, tablets and wearables.

He did go out with a bang, leaking an image of possibly the most anticipated phone at this moment in time; The successor to the Moto X. There's no certainty about the name of the device yet. Most rumours mention the 'Moto X+1', however some people also claim that it will simply be called the 'Moto X2'.

Intel Core i7-5930K – six cores, 3.50GHz/3.70GHz clock-rate, 15MB cache, 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes – $583;
Intel Core i7-5820K – six cores, 3.30GHz/3.60GHz clock-rate, 15MB cache, 28 PCI Express 3.0 lanes – $389;

We only have 2 days to wait for a full introduction, but hey who doesn't like a sneaky peek.

Intel refused to comment at this time, probably because they are a touch miffed at Videocardz for not reading the Embargo part of the overview...

I've read this article, which is in german http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Manipuliertes-Alteisen-Gefaelschte-Nvidia-Grafikkarten-in-deutschen-Shops-2302667.html

An e-tailer in germany apparently tried to sell Nvidias GT440 for 660. Not only they shipped the wrong card to the buyer but the bios of the card was modified so programs like GPUZ would read it the 440 as a 660.
The e-tailer sends the cards out as "bulk" meaning that pretty much the customer would recieve the card in an antistatic bag and that's all. E-tailer the cards were sent directly that way by PoV but PoV denies any involvement.

NVIDIA might skip 800 series desktop GPU's naming and skip straight to the 900 series.

The latest rumour is that NVIDIA will announce its new Maxwell GPU architecture on September 9th this year and then a week later on September 16th they will announce two new GPU's, the GTX 970 and 980. These will be based on the GM204 Maxwell architecture.

If you're looking to buy a Oneplus One smartphone soon, but cannot get ahold of an invite you may have to wait for a bit longer. It is rumoured that from October onwards, the invite system shall be abandoned.

The reason that OnePlus works with the invitation system now is because they don't produce a lot of phones. This does mean that a lot of people cannot buy the phone and have to move on to other, usually more expensive phones. They wanted to drop this system in September, but this has moved to October for unknown reasons.

OnePlus introduced the smartphone in spring 2014 and since then tech enthusiasts have gone crazy over this high-end phone for a very affordable price, being cheaper than the Nexus 5 model while offering similar specifications. The OnePlus One runs on a Snapdragon 801 SoC and runs Cyanogenmod instead of Android.

This came about by an announcement that some of Samsungs latest TV's will have the new service built in. It was also confirmed that Netflix 4K will also be available on some of their European TV's.

It's been rumored to be the 14th of November for a long time however Assassins Creed got put back 2 weeks to the same day. Rockstar answered a few questions recently and dismissed the stupid rumor that the PC version had been axed and confirmed it was all on schedule for release as planned. They did not deny that it would be coming on the 10-20th of November. I hope it comes before i53.

nVidia it seems is going to be getting a touch wallet friendly by slashing the retail price of the GTX 770, bringing it closer in price to its rival, AMDs R9 285. The GTX 770 at retail $325 - $350 USD but with proposed price cut the new retail price will be $275. With the recent announcement of the R9 295x2 33% cut I think we could be seeing a new competition trend, great news for us buyers, keep up the good work nVidia & AMD ;)

Agreed, my 1090T was a fantastic CPU, loved that thing.

Next year will be excavator, and then that is the end of the Bulldozer arc. With the advancement of things like openCL, AMD could become much more competitive in the future. If any Microsoft apps became openCL accelerated (excel for example) AMD will do well.

AMD's new X86 Architecture is codenamed "Zen".

AMD has admitted that its Bulldozer microarchitecture was a misstep but claims that its next-generation replacement, Zen, will deliver the performance improvements required to become competitive with Intel once more.

Have to say it's good to see that AMD have admitted that Bulldozer wasn't very good, and that they actually want to compete with Intel again.

Hopefully this will mean that, Intel might have some competition at the high end or enthusiast level.

I know I will keep a eye on this.

Some X99 motherboards have issues apparently. 2 reviewers and apparently more users have reported some rather catastrophic hardware failures.

"Intel's Haswell-E Eight-Core CPU and X99 motherboards just debuted (http://hardware-beta.slashdot.org/story/14/08/29/1833254/intels-haswell-e-desktop-cpu-debuts-with-eight-cores-ddr4-memory) but it looks like there may be some early adoption troubles leading to the new, ultra-expensive X99 motherboards and processors burning up. Phoronix first ran a story about their X99 motherboard having a small flame and smoke (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=msi_x99_fail&num=1) when powering up for the first time and then Legit Reviews also ran an article about their motherboard going up in smoke for reasons unknown (http://www.legitreviews.com/intel-x99-motherboard-goes-up-in-smoke-for-reasons-unknown_150008). The RAM, X99 motherboards, and power supplies were different in these two cases. Manufacturers are now investigating and in at least the case of LR their Core i7-5960X also fried in the process."Source - http://beta.slashdot.org/story/206891

Damn, you would be gutted if you just spent £1400 on a motherboard and CPU only to have it blow up on you the first time you press the on switch :(

Hopefully it is just a small faulty batch of motherboards causing probs.

That's pretty damn rough indeed!

Teething problems with new hardware, particularly graphics cards is quite common. I guess it's just best to avoid bleeding edge new hardware for a while after it's released.

iPhone 6 and 6 plus will only have 1GB ram. What was apple thinking!
Source (http://www.gsmarena.com/both_iphone_6_and_6_plus_have_just_1gb_of_ram-news-9674.php)

Apple made a big deal of the number of transistors in the latest A8 chipset at the announcement event. Now we're sure it will run things smooth on the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus even if its GPU may not bring gaming graphics to the next level. Now however we learn the two devices won't be the multitasking monsters you might expect - according to early reviews of the devices both share the same limited 1GB of RAM.
That sounds logical given they both use the exact same chipset - the Apple A8 but some rumors had it that the bigger iPhone 6 Plus will have more RAM.

EVGA GTX 970 with ACX cooler has misaligned heatpipes on the GPU. They have tried to talk their a** out of it but it isn't fooling the population at all.

"The way the EVGA GTX 970 ACX heat sink was designed is based on the GTX 970 wattage plus an additional 40% cooling headroom on top of it. There are 3 heat pipes on the heatsink – 2 x 8mm major heat pipes to distribute the majority of the heat from the GPU to the heatsink, and a 3rd 6mm heatpipe is used as a supplement to the design to reduce another 2-3 degrees Celsius. Also we would like to mention that the cooler passed NVIDIA Greenlight specifications.

Due to the GPU small die size, we intended for the GPU to contact two major heat pipes with direct touch to make the best heat dissipation without any other material in between.

We all know the Maxwell GPU is an extremely power efficient GPU, our SC cooler was overbuilt for it and allowed us to provide cards with boost clocks at over 1300MHz. EVGA also has an “FTW” version for those users who want even higher clocks.

Regarding fan noise, we understand that some have expressed concerns over the fan noise on the EVGA GTX 970 cards, this is not a fan noise issue but it is more of an aggressive fan curve set by the default BIOS. The fan curve can be easily adjusted in EVGA PrecisionX or any other overclocking software. Regardless, we have heard the concerns and will provide a BIOS update to reduce the fan noise during idle.

Thanks,
EVGA"

Raijintek have released a funky AIO for £70. Its different and its pretty modable.
Raijinteks first all-in-one water cooler named Triton combines optimal processor cooling capability. The extraordinary performance is made possible by utilising a waterblock made of nickel-plated copper with micro channels, a 240mm Radiator with a high fin density along with a high-grade low-noise pump. The two 120 mm fans are manually adjustable and three coloured coolants are included for all tatstes and in the process illuminated by two integrated LEDs.

If the specs were leaked by another tech site I'd agree, but it's from the developers so no messing around and gospel. Although I'm pretty sure the minimum specs will be quite low, given that it's also being released on 360 & PS3.

I have a feeling that you will still be ok with 3-4GB and they are just over exaggerating the VRAM usage. 6GB sounds a bit unrealistic to be honest, either that or the game is badly optimized.

Intel Corp gave a current-quarter revenue forecast above expectations and said the supply chain was in good shape ahead of holiday season as demand for personal computers recovered.

A global slump in personal computer demand that began with Apple Inc's launch of the iPad four years ago has stabilized in recent months, in part due to companies replacing employees' older laptops.

Intel said in a statement overnight that demand for its chips was in good shape.

"The worldwide PC supply chain appears to be healthy, with inventory levels appropriate in anticipation of the fourth quarter retail cycles," Intel said.

The recovering PC industry has helped push Intel's shares 24 per cent higher in 2014, making it the top performer in the Dow Jones industrial average.

“The telling thing will be next year. Do we continue to get a healthier, more stable PC market?,” said Ascendiant Capital analyst Cody Acree. “I think the enterprise refresh largely plays out by the end of 2014 and then next year the PC industry returns to modest annual declines.”

The results overnight, the first from a major technology company this earnings season, came after Chandler, Arizona-based Microchip warned last Thursday of weak demand in China that would soon become visible across the chip industry, sparking a broad selloff in chip stocks.

Intel said its gross margins would likely slip to 64 per cent in the current quarter from 65 per cent in the third quarter.

Intel has made little progress expanding from the PC industry into chips for smartphones and has been spending heavily to catch up to Qualcomm.

For the third quarter, Intel said its mobile and communications group had an operating loss of $1.04 billion on revenue of $1 million, reflecting subsidies Intel has been paying to persuade tablet makers to use its chips.

Intel posted third-quarter net income of $3.32 billion, or 66 cents a share, compared with $2.95 billion, or 58 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter as demand for personal computers stabilised. Analysts on average expected EPS of 65 cents.

Third-quarter revenue was $14.6 billion, up 8 per cent from the year-ago quarter, Intel said in a statement. Intel said it expects fourth-quarter revenue of $14.7 billion, plus or minus $500 million.

Analysts on average expected third-quarter revenue of $14.44 billion and fourth-quarter revenue of $14.48 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of Intel were up 2.05 per cent in extended trade after closing up 2.13 per cent at $32.14 on Nasdaq.

SSL broken. AGAIN.
From the researchers that brought you BEAST and CRIME comes another attack against Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), one of the protocols that's used to secure Internet traffic from eavesdroppers both government and criminal.

Calling the new attack POODLE—that's "Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption"—the attack allows a man-in-the-middle, such as a malicious Wi-Fi hotspot or a compromised ISP, to extract data from secure HTTP connections. This in turn could let that attacker do things such as access online banking or e-mail systems. The flaw was documented by Bodo Möller, Thai Duong, and Krzysztof Kotowicz, all who work at Google. Thai Duong, working with Juliano Rizzo, described the similar BEAST attack in 2011, and the CRIME attack in 2012.

The attack depends on the fact that most Web servers and Web browsers allow the use of the ancient SSL version 3 protocol to secure their communications. Although SSL has been superseded by Transport Layer Security, it's still widely supported on both servers and clients alike, and is still required for compatibility with Internet Explorer 6. SSLv3, unlike TLS 1.0 or newer, omits validation of certain pieces of data that accompany each message. Attackers can use this weakness to decipher an individual byte at time of the encrypted data, and in so doing, extract the plain text of the message byte by byte.

OnePlus One Pre-Orders Start Oct. 27, But Act Fast.

Following Davva2004's review, I thought a few of you might like this. Your chance to get hold of one of these beasties.
Interested in getting your hands on the unlocked OnePlus One smartphone that's been causing a buzz on social media? Mark your calendar for Oct. 27.

At this point, the only way to get one of these handsets is to either secure an invite or participate in occasional promotions or contests the company runs. But that's about to change. OnePlus just announced plans to open up pre-orders for the One on Oct. 27.

But the pre-order window only lasts for an hour, starting at 11 a.m. EST, so you'll need to act fast. The good news is that you can prepare your order ahead of time to ensure your checkout goes quickly during that very brief 60-minute window.

"Go ahead and get your order just the way you want it," OnePlus wrote in a note on the pre-order page. "Save your cart, mark your calendar, and relax. You've got this."

But pre-ordering doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the phone right away. Once you successfully place your pre-order, you'll get an estimated shipping time. If you get an invitation after submitting your pre-order you can use it to skip the line and get your device shipped right away.

OnePlus One will also be updating their Android OS to Android L/Lollipop/5. Should roll out within 3 months(along with HTC and etc brands)

Excalabur50
23-10-14, 11:06 AM
It should be no surprise to anyone that many smartphones may have been designed to last about 24 months – the length of a typical contract with a network service provider. After all, it is a fast-moving, high-turnover market and planned obsolescence is how it is kept moving.

Being high turnover means new models with new features can be brought to market and readily consumed by users conditioned to want the latest and greatest.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. It simply means that we will see a lot of new capabilities in the smartphones coming onto the market in the next few years.

Some things are not that far off and there is plenty of speculation about what else is to come. So what are smartphones of the future going to be like?

Your devoted personal assistant

There is a shift from smartphones being a communications device to a multi-function, voice-controlled computer that helps you run more and more aspects of your life.

It’s already a cloud-connected digital personal assistant that knows you, but it will grow to communicate with the computer in your car, at home, in the office, at the shopping mall and elsewhere.

It is likely to spend more time in your pocket too, as peripheral devices such as heads-up displays and watches bring the package into the wearable technology domain.

It can be downright dangerous to see the lack of situational awareness that many people have as they walk about city streets with eyes glued to their smartphones, crossing the street without looking and bumping into others passing by.

Master remote control

Modern life is cluttered with remote controllers for a growing number of gadgets. And with more devices becoming endowed with smarts of their own and wirelessly connected to the web, the major players are already creating master control apps such as Apple’s Homekit that will group devices into categories, or “suites” and allow all kinds of operations to be performed.

Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi says in the video below to tell them to “get ready for bed”, and your smarthome-connected devices will make the garage door close, the doors lock and the lights dim.

One hotel chain is already talking about allowing you to be able to lock and unlock doors with your smartphone, so expect it to replace dedicated cards in a growing number of situations.

Health management

There is already a thriving market for smartphone-synced devices that monitor various aspects of your health; heart rate, distance covered and calories burned to name a few. And this is just the beginning.

In the coming years we are likely to see the growth of integrated health management applications that knows your history and receives data from sensors embedded in your watch and the things you wear, all of which lets you keep tabs on your health status and environmental conditions.

The smartphone becomes your personal physician that advises you in real-time how to stay healthy.

Computational cameras

The technology of image capture is moving from digital to computational.

Smartphone cameras of the future will likely incorporate something like Nvidea’s paradigm-shifting Chimera platform.

This emulates the human eye by being able to focus fast, track objects and compensate for adverse lighting, all of which will combine to produce amazingly life-like photos and videos.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality (AR) technology allows you to point your smartphone at a scene in the physical world, and the image on the screen is overlaid with all kinds of interesting information that has been retrieved from a database.

Its your own personal tour guide and teacher, and it is a technology just waiting for a good heads-up display to make it really useful. AR has been around for awhile, but is about to become much better.

Story continues on page 2. Please click below.

Greatly extended battery life

Lithium-ion, a revolutionary new battery technology being developed by researchers at the University of Illinois has the potential to extend battery life up to 2,000 times beyond what current batteries can provide.

Even with heavy use, your phone might go weeks or months between recharges.

There is also work in progress on kinetically charged batteries that use the energy of movement to keep the battery charged.

5G for superfast data and pervasive Wi-Fi

There is still a lot of life left in the current 4G mobile network, but when it does finally give way to 5G, the new network will offer superfast and efficient data transmission, possibly up to 100 times that of the fastest 4G, according to Huawei.

At those speeds, you could download a hi-definition feature film to your smartphone in less than a second.

Wi-Fi is also likely to become pervasive with the phasing in of new technologies such as Hotspot 2.0 and Next Generation that will allow you to stay in wireless contact almost anywhere you roam.

3D screens and holograms

With several 3D models already on the market (LG Optimus 3D, Motorola MT810 and Samsung AMOLED 3D) it is not difficult to see this trend continuing in the short to medium term.

Beyond 3D screens, there is talk of holographic smartphone displays in the not-too-distant future.

In 10 or 20 years

Much of this will be here in the next five years. But how about ten years from now?

Some futurists are predicting LCD displays that you can have on your regular glasses or in contact lenses, enhanced virtual keyboards and voice control replacing physical keyboards and integrated miniature devices small enough to fit into watches and jewellery that never need charging.

As wild as it sounds, we may well eventually have direct mind control over the smartdevices that are integrated, even implanted with consent into our physical selves.

Managing without your second brain

With smartphones morphing into powerful, multi-function computers that are moving closer to the centre of our lives, perhaps the biggest problem is not technological but psychological.

When the thought of being without your smartphone creates anxiety, it is time to switch it off and go for a walk in the forest or along the beach.

As we all know, Microsoft bought Nokia, however now they are aiming to eliminate the whole Nokia brand on their line of Lumia Windows Phones. Here are some pictures of what the branding will look like:

This is no ordinary thumb drive, it can do a lot more as it is basically a full SSD that is inside this drive. With the proper set-up, you can run a variety of operating systems with full capabilities.
The drive itself is built from aircraft-grade aluminium. The internals are powered by a LSI SandForce 2281 controller that can deliver up to 455 MB/s reads and up to 440MB/s writes with a UASP compatible motherboard or USB controller.
They are priced at $109.99 -120GB and $174.99 -240GB

For more information head over to VisionTek's [email protected] www.visiontek.com/solid-state-drives.html

Personally, I think it is good news that a company is pushing the limits of USB 3.0 and I can only imagine faster drives when USB 3.1 becomes a standard for all new pc's.

Its been rumoured for a while but yeah, once again lenovo buying themselves into a new market. Pretty decent as Motorola know how to make a good phone and lenovo also make half decent, if a bit odd specc'd, phones. Lenovo also have a big share in the Chinese market, which could only be a good thing for Motorola.
http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/blog_post_banner-01-01v3-640x404.png

Motorola has announced that it is now officially under control of Lenovo, closing the deal that was announced at the beginning of the year.

...

Now it's up to Lenovo to not screw things up. In the blog post, Motorola states that they will "continue to focus on pure Android and fast upgrades," so it sounds like Lenovo won't mess with a good thing. When Google took over Motorola, it said it "inherited 12 to 18 months of product pipeline." The Google/Motorola deal closed in May of 2012, and sure enough, 15 months later we saw the first Moto X. It's safe to assume Lenovo's Motorola takeover will follow a similar schedule, so expect to wait about a year before we see any real changes.

Zalman Tech Co. Files for Bankruptcy
After a torrid few weeks on the stock market, seeing their price fall from 1,770 ( Oct 6th ) to 489 ( Oct 30th ) the company has filed for Bankruptcy at Seoul Central District Court on November 3, 2014.
This comes on the back of a South Korean customs and financial authorities investigation over suspected accounting fraud. According to the officials, the Korea Customs Service (KCS) is looking into allegations that privately-owned Moneual Inc., a manufacturer of computers and other small home appliances, altered the books to inflate its business performance and sold export bonds worth 1 trillion won (US$946.8 million).

Destiny 2 is in the works http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/destiny-2-is-already-in-the-works/

Destiny is a good game, but it's got stale already.

The Multiplayer aspect of it, fighting against other people is kind of boring and the solo aspect of it is getting to that point as well.

It's a shame that it wasn't released on pc, and at the moment the rumors are putting it being released on the pc in March 2015 but I think by then, the game will be a distant memory for most people.

I will get it, if it comes out on the pc and play through it but I can only hope that the 2nd one comes out on pc at the same time as it comes out for the Xbox and Playstation.

Whatsapp to start showing a blue checkmark for read messages

Everyone knows Whatsapp, and if you don't either everyone around you uses an iPhone and their messaging service, or you've been living under a rock. Whatsapp is a free instant messaging service that lets you text your friends free of charge and even lets you add images, videos and voice recordings, or share your location or a contact.

A few months ago, Whatsapp was aquired by Facebook for $19 Billion US dollars:
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-26266689

Yesterday, Whatsapp announced an OTA (Over The Air) update. This means that you don't have to manually install anything, but the app would update itself. Since then, users can now see if a contact has read the message that they have sent.

The checkmark system is staying:
✓ - Sent
✓✓ - Received by contact

But now they are adding a new colour to the double checkmark when the other contact has checked the conversation:

✓✓ - Read by recipient

http://www.flavourmag.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/whatsapp-blue-tick1-650x357.jpg

Many users have already stated not to be happy with this update, as they tend to read a message, but finish whatever it is that they are doing at that moment before they take the time to reply. They expect the contact on the other end to then think that they might be ignoring them, or need to think long and hard about answering a sensitive question.

Personally, I agree. My mum is one of these people that has a panic attack when you don't text back instantly (even though she turned the 'last seen' thing off for herself). Do you guys use Whatsapp? What do you think?

The update is available as of now on the Android and iOS versions of Whatsapp. There's not word about Windows phone so far.

Hurray! I wish them a speedy recovery.

Zalman USA, a private company that distributes coolers and other products by Zalman Tech in the U.S., on Friday issued a statement denying bankruptcy of Zalman Tech. The company promised to clarify the situation about the insolvency of its parent company as well as reveal more about the future of Zalman by the end of the month.
“I know that recently various media and other vendors are spreading rumors regarding Zalman going bankrupt over the recent scandals in Korea by our parent company Moneual,” said a spokesperson for Zalman USA in a statement published by Tom’s Hardware. “I wanted to assure you that these rumors of Zalman HQ going bankrupt are completely false. While our HQ is having some financial difficulties due to the recent troubles experienced by Moneual, Zalman is not going bankrupt.”

It’s time to make that right. Refund anyone who has purchased the game. Recall the copies still on shelves. Fix the game before releasing it to the public. Half-finished, buggy releases like this have no place in today’s industry.

Good. If the more well reknowned media companies start bashing game devs for the releases maybe that'll teach them a lesson.. then they start giving them bad reviews and scores and praise the companies that are doing it right.

Possible AMD 390x performance leak

There is some light at the end of the tunnel for AMD, though, and it seems to have cracked the high power consumption of its previous generation graphics cards too. Leaked benchmarks that appeared recently on the Chip Hell forum*here, claim to show that a yet unknown graphics card is over 15% faster than Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980, yet consumes only 12W more power on average.

It'll just cost £800 and not be that much faster.

I'm quite interested in this as, unlike Nvidia, AMD tend to screw up in some dumbass aspect (e.g. reference coolers only at launch etc) so it'll be interesting to see how the card partners counter it and it'd be cool to have a proper card battle, like the 680 vs 7970 days again.

True but I doubt Maxwell has optimised drivers yet, I have a feeling we'll see "Miracle" drivers released around the time of AMD's new cards just like Nvidia's "Wonder Drivers" (http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=61522).

Exactly, and with Nvidia not dicking around with price for once, things could only get better :D. I honestly think that this coming generation of cards will be a cracker! Both sides will have their strengths and weaknesses obviously but I don't think I'd say Nvidia have won just yet.

The upgrade rash will start to itch if it is too good though . I'm already not happy with my 780Ti and if prices go down and if a right beaut is released...

If anything is to by the 390x's performance/watt figures then Nvidia will be behind by quiet a bit while barely drawing less power(for the 980). Then they both release epeen cards and etc..

I want to upgrade to but decided to wait till next gen AMD stuff is here and freesync.. i'll go with whichever company has better price/performance and better monitors.

Ubisoft has released the 1.5.0 patch for Far Cry 4 weighing in at approx 1.3GB, the highlights of this are listed below;

PC Patch 1.5.0 - December 8th, 2014
PC Patch 1.5.0 is now available for download.

Patch Notes:
Added 21:9 aspect ratio support
Added Russian text and subtitles to worldwide game version
Fixed an issue with aim assist
Fixed an issue with grappling if aim button was remapped on another key
Fixed an issue with mouse input
Fixed an issue with movement key binding on mouse buttons
Fixed an issue with Uplay invites in Steam version
Fixed various Controls issues
Fixed various Graphic issues
Fixed various IGE issues
Fixed various Session Browser issues
Fixed various UI issues
NVIDIA graphics preset was removed
Reduced performance drop impact during streaming

If you still continue to experience any of these issues when this patch goes live, please contact our Ubisoft Support.

After playing this for a short amount of time (less than 5 minutes), I can confirm that the SLi issue with ghosting is still present and only way around these issues is to disable SLi in the NVidia control applet.

Quite a few people are reporting issues with loading the game in offline mode, and that displays of 60Hz are inducing a lot of flickering and stuttering on screen, when will Ubisoft pull their heads out their posterior and fix these issues that have been reported and make the game playable for a lot of users out there?

There are so many issues still present with this game, for those who have been waiting for the fixes on this before buying, are still going to be waiting a while longer unfortunately.

Microsoft has hinted that Windows 10 might become a subscription-based OS. Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner stated that Microsoft wanted to make money on its most important product in a different way during a presentation at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference. "And that has something to do with services", he claimed.

Audio and written transcript of the presentation:
http://www.microsoft.com/investor/Events/Presentations/2015/CreditSuisse-Turner.aspx?eventid=153082

To the question if Microsoft would lose money with Windows, Turner answered with 'Yes'. "The important thing is that we monetize Windows in a different way, one that involves services. There are additional opportunities for us to bring services to the product by doing so in a creative manner."

By switching to a subscription-based service, Microsoft wants to make money on the usage of Windows 10, rather than the purchase of the OS. At this moment, manufacturers can already use Windows for free on devices with screens under 9". Turner did not mention the option to make Windows free on all devices.

He did refer to the soon-to-be 40th birthday of the company. "The first 39 years we built one of the best business models ever, especially around Windows. To be clear, this was our past. When we look at our future, we want to make it a cloud-based OS".

Turner promised that Microsoft would reveal more information about pricing on Windows 10 in the first half of 2015.

I so hope they don't introduce monthly or annual subscriptions just to use the OS, That would royally suck :(

Ok so first they give windows 8.1 a free upgrade to windows 10, and then they introduce subscriptions. Surely the rumor market is running wild here?

/disable auto updates ;)

I think it will depend on how much that subscription is but knowing MS it will be way over the top. may see people going over to Linux or hackintosh

CD Projekt Red Accused of “Downgrading” Graphics in The Witcher 3

I so hope this isn't true :(

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/thewitcher3wildhunt-geralttorchinghisenemieswlogo1407869454jpg-0d2d80-800x450.jpg

CD Prokect Red has only just announced a 3 month delay to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but now the developer is being accused of downgrading the graphics, something that was revealed to the Internet in the latest trailer to the game.

There’s a new trailer that features “low-resolution environmental and character textures” reports WCCFTech (http://wccftech.com/the-witcher-3-downgraded-cd-projekt-red-clarifies/), with some fans of the game taking to CD Projekt Red’s YouTube channel and forums. One fan, JohnReese, wrote “The downgrade is real. I refused to believe it at first, but it’s pretty obvious now. Still a good trailer though, and I’m sure the game will be amazing nonetheless.” JohnReese was replied to by CD Projekt Red’s Community and Website Coordinator Marcin Momot, who said:“I believe some explanation is required here. Unfortunately this time we’ve encountered some horrible YouTube compression problems. At this very moment we are working on fixing this and will upload another version of the trailer as soon as we can. It will present much higher quality. I want to assure you that there will be no downgrade – I see this game every day – it looks stunning.”

I'd rather Windows 10 be subscription based, I'd rather pay £10 a month say than hundreds to then have to buy another copy later on. It might also stop pirating of the OS because well...if you can't afford a small monthly sum then how do you even compute!

i'd pay a yearly fee sure but not 120 quid. I think 45 is far more reasonable considering the numbers of units sold and the gaps between new OS's

My only concern would be is that will a subscription service encourage a new OS every year kinda like a call of duty or assassins creed syndrome

Some people have bills to pay and maybe don't have the budget for a monthly fee when their xmas gift of windows X is a flat out price. Besides, monthly fee will differ in countries and no doubt if its true, Norwegians will probably end up paying almost double

I suppose, best bet is to allow for you to buy it either way. I pay for Office 365 monthly, just prefare to do it that way than one big sum just for office tools.

Personally I just buy the OS when I can, Paying a monthly fee for your operating system is just wrong.

This was actually discussed years ago on another forum, People then were like "Nahhh that will never happen, If it did they might as well start charging for GPU drivers and security patches"

Capitalism has its good points and its bad points, This is a bad point.

I'm on my phone right now, so no proper article but it seems like Oneplus has dropped the invite system that was previously required to buy their One smartphone. The 64GB model already seems sold out for now though.

Anyone else feel free to make a proper thread on this :)
