AMD roumors

New architecture 8000 series cards have been rumoured for late this year for months.
I hope AMD release good cards at reasonable prices, just like the 7000 series. I'm not upgrading till I see what the 8000 series is like compared to Nvidia's 700 series anyway.

I take it this means that WCCF tech are retracting their 'scoop' on the Hawaii architecture!

Should we trust them this time around?

I want to know about some CPU rumors! Haswell is less than a week away and I can't believe AMDis going to ride out the 8350 til next sspring! But I haven't heard a peep of anything upcomingaside from that 5 GHz chip that's pretty much been dismissed as pure rumor (including TTL's latest sib video). I keep hoping and holding out thinking they're gonna release a high binned 8370 at around 4.2 stock.

+1 yeah i would like to know when steamroller is gonna be released, as thats what i am waiting on to upgrade

Aah... It's worth mentioning that the article in question is quoting a random forum post that doesn't cite any sources whatsoever. :p

As rumors go, I'd say take this with a massive grain of salt

ahh fair enough i didn't know that i did say rumors tho, there were romours they were gonna do a 20nm gpu line a week or so ago too. so it could all just be bull but, i could see them pushing something out to compete with nvidia

Who knows, I'm always extremely wary of any articles with no sources or those that cite "Unamed Sources". The official line is that they'll promote the 7000 series through 2013 through game bundling, developer collaboration, driver development etc.

BTW, regarding Steamroller, the only official news I've seen thus far is that there are supposed to be Steamroller based Opterons this year:
http://techreport.com/news/24594/amd-roadmap-confirms-steamroller-based-opterons-this-year

And the desktop APUs with Steamroller cores are supposed to arrive towards the latter half of the year.

The 8350's successor will probably arrive sometime early next year.

yeah i have read both of those steamroller articles i am quite avidly waiting on it haha trying to get all the news i can

I'm still holding out hope for a "8370" coming out in June sometime with a clock of 4.3 with Turbo at 4.9 and coming in around $225. Nothing ground breaking but a little something to get a little press after Haswell comes out next Monday. I'd buy one just to have a new toy to play with and because it would likely be really high binned and overclock very well. Pipe dream I know but maybe.....

i think that is definitely a pipe dream mate, as the 8350 are already the high binned chips as far as i know.i really an looking forward to seeing what AMD bring to the table next

Yeah you're probably right. The only reason I think it would happen is that I just can't believe AMD would let the 8350 be their only dog in the fight for 2 years! That's why I keep thinking something will come out.

From a financial standpoint, AMD would probably be best to can all the "big cores" they've got in development entirely and play to their strengths - APUs for the low-midrange market like Kabini. That would mean no Opterons or FX chips at all.

I mean they've already lost the server market to Intel, and they've nothing to answer Intel's i7 or the higher end 2011 processors, not to mention a dying PC market. Plus big high end x86 CPUs are extremely expensive to develop particularly for a company the size of AMD. In fact they're probably even spreading themselves a bit thin as it is given their size, between APUs, Big Core CPUs, and competing with Nvidia in the GPU front.

That being said though, the PC enthusiast and AMD fan in me would absolutely hate this! :p

Yeah I couldn't disagree more. Yeah they're not as fast as Intel but they're also cheaper. The 8320 can hang with the 3570K and costs $60 less and the i7 runs nearly $200 more. Plus with all the new consoles coming out with AMD 8 core CPU's and developers making games only for consoles these days, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to think AMD might become the preferred gaming chip. AMD outperforms Intel in Crysis 3 which is a good example of the engines developers may be using in the future. Not to mention they have hired back a lot of the people that were there when AMD was on top. So when you factor in all that and their successful GPU business, the future isn't that bleak at all.

Since the future is APU's, they still have to design the architecture for these CPU's. AMD while the PC market is shrinking, the enthusiast market isn't so there is still money to be made there.

Oh yeah in some benches the 8350 actually beats the i7. I guess I'm really referring to the ultra top end only - the 2011 stuff is well and truly out of reach of AMDs offerings for instance.

The Opterons are kind of the same. They offer more value for money and compete well with the mid-range Xeons, but the top end Xeons (the native 8-core ones especially) are in a league of their own but of course cost a ridiculous amount more, on account of having no competition.

I agree the console wins are great, and us AMD fans could be nicely set in the future.

The enthusiast market is pretty small though. Sales through OEMs are where most of the revenue comes from for both AMD and Intel.

On a more positive note though, as far as toys go I can confirm the 8350 is a blast. I managed 5.2GHz out of my one. I say go pick one up if you're itching for an upgrade. :p

I think the console thing could be really big for AMD not just in mo' money that they can throw into R&D but as we all know only too well, game developers put all their time and effort into making their games work best on consoles but if the consoles are using the same architecture as AMD PC's, that could possibly mean AMD could equal Intel in gaming and maybe even beat them out as shown by Crysis 3. Regardless of which team youre on, thats great news as a competitive CPU market means nothing but good things for us enthusiasts.

And yeah, we're a small segment of the market but back in 2010 the figure was we were a 10 BILLION dollar segment. Thats a LOT of money and we're probably accounting for a little more than that by now. If AMD could just get 5% of that enthusiast market, thats $500,000,000 added to their bottom line. So while thats not enough to make them focus on the desktop PC as a priority, I think its enough that theyll try to keep making better and better CPU's for us.

5.2 is an outstanding overclock!! Thats definitely the highest Ive seen reported (by somebody that wasnt obviously full of shit! :D ). Dont tempt me. Im fighting temptation on a daily basis.
