It uses the onboard motion sensor. The sensor is primarly used to lock the hard drive in case the laptop is dropped. If the platter is still spinning when the lappy hit the ground the arm collides with the platter and uber bad things happen
But of course, there are much more fun things that can be done with the motion sensor. AKA iAlertU, SmackBook, MacSaber, etc.
