LEGO!

I was a huge fan of Lego when I was a kid. I spent hours and hours building and playing and gave them up sometime in Middle School. I had been kidding with my wife about wanting the Lego Millennium Falcon for Christmas. It was sort of an ongoing joke between us. Well she actually got it for me.

I put it together a week later and the passion I had as a kid for these building bricks has now developed into an addiction. I've been hunting the stores for clearance pricing on sets and found a few, but my craving is insatiable. I can't get enough!

Browsing NeoGaf, I stumbled upon their Lego thread. I remembered many of the sets from when I was a kid and then I came upon the modular building sets. These are some of the coolest looking Lego sets I have seen. The detail in the buildings is impressive. The individual sets connect together to form a street. Rated 16+, they even make me feel less ashamed of playing with a toy.

Unfortunately, at $150+ per set I was sure if I wanted to spend that kind of money on a pile of plastic. Then, as luck would have it, I went to a local flea market type store. This place is filled with overstock and items that may be damaged or discontinued. I found a badly beaten up Lego box all taped together. It was the Grand Emporium set marked at $75 and all the pieces were there and still sealed! I tried to resist, even at one point walking away only to come back and look again. I ended up leaving with 3 sets.

Next set on the list, Fire Brigade:

Anyone else revisiting hobbies they once had as kids?

Cool hubby. I was a big fan of lego when i was a kid also. Imo i believe this can be good for everyones creativity to play around with. Our 2 year old daughter likes lego aswell, and i have recently teached her to put togetter those big lego bricks. She loves it, and i think its good to play with something we both like

Btw, those buildings look amazing. Il see if i can get my hands on something like that

i used to play with lego 'technics' (better than meccano)

it served me well as a great learning tool, and i didn't even know i was learning... i was just playing.

needless to say, i soon went on to precision screwdrivers and nothing in the house was safe. i would practise on my brothers' toys first before my own. and i always had atleast one piece left over when i rebuilt stuff - lol

LOL, it's funny you mention that, I did the same thing. Took apart anything that had a screw. My brother still brings up his RC car I tore apart when I was in first grade.

Thinking on it, most of my hobbies revolve around building; PCs, Lego, woodworking, construction.

Absolutely loved and love Lego! Mum would buy me so much of it I'd have huge boxes worth I'd bring downstairs (my room wasn't trig enough!) and pour it all over the floor, piecing together sets (the spaceship was a personal favourite of mine

) and making a load of houses and Lego scenarios.

I really want to buysp some now... My mum bought my brother (3) a duplo set, I think I play more with it than he does.

Love the place.

I like the old technic lego more that the stuff they sell now.

The new stuff are just shells 6-8 pieces that get put together.

I guess they had to dumb it down a lot as kids nowerdays don't use their heads...

Sir, I believe I smell a Lego folding farm chassis cooking!

Used to be a massive Bionicle fan myself (right from Bohrok(sp?) in 2003), gave it up in favour of building rigs

Technic Lego is the real deal, mate. Used to fool around with that all the time when I was younger. It's still awesome to watch people make insane realistic things from it though =P

I've still got my red cube shaped LEGO bucket i could make a house with a wind mill that actually turned

I was well happy

I sitll haven't had time to build the bridge, but my wife bought another set for me for my birthday.

Set 10212, the Imperial Shuttle

Price ranges from $219 to $259 depending on the store, she found it for $79 unopened. Again, the box was damaged, but all the bags and manuals are intact.
