Hey peeps,

I got my ps3 hooked up to my hdmi monitor. I also connected a audio 3.5mm jack cable to the audio out on my monitor and the other end into the aux on my sub woofer. But when i play game or watch blu-rays, i don't get 5.1 sound, only 2.1.

Does any one know what i need to do?

Btw the monitor is a Asus 22" VH226H and the speakers are the Creative Gigaworks G500 5.1

The only way you will get 5.1 from your monitor is if it has either an optical or coaxial out from what I understand, the only other way is the speaker system also needs hdmi for you to get 5.1 sound. Just run an optical from your ps3 to your speakers or coaxial or regular rca and you should get 5.1 that way and just by pass the monitor.

Thanks for the reply.

Does the opitcal cable require an adaptor as the sub woofer only has a aux which is standard 3.5mm?

Yup, that's a great idea. It would be great if the speaker system has an optical connection so that way you only need 1 cable.

The auxillary, if I'm not mistaken, uses the 3.5mm jack. Yup, you'll need a converter if your subwoofer only has standard RCA and the AUX connections. Otherwise, you'll only be getting 2.0 stereo sound.

If you have a receiver, for example, like one for home theatres that support optical connections it would be an easier task as that will give you the ability to connect your speakers to the receiver. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

What's the make/model of the 5.1 system? Chances are if it hasn't got an optical input, it might have a co-axial S/PDIF instead. In which case, you need an optical to co-axial adapter, which can be picked up fairly cheaply.

Hey dipzy,

Monitors, unless they have a built in multichannel surround support, they will only process audio to stereo.

It's actually pretty hard to find a good and inexpensive unit for digital to multichannel adapter/decoder. A receiver that supports digital optical input or HDMI would be great since you can then have other speakers or DVD/Blu-Ray players connected to it as well.
