Hey guys.

Looking to buy a SSD for my Brother for his birthday and was wondering what to go for. He's running a X58 mobo so he limited to sata 2 atm so I'm thinking should I still go with something like the OCZ solid or agility, or should I go for one of the older drives like a Kingston V100 or something along those lines.

My reason for asking for your oppions is because originally I thought that I should go with a sata 3 drive so he can still use it when he gets round to upgrading but I've also heard that some people have had problems with some of the newer sandforce ssd drives and so thought an older drive might be a safer choice since he's limited to sata 2 anyway.

Been crazy busy at work recently and not been able to keep up to date with things so not 100% on what the best thing to do would be so would really like some advice from you guys. If you wanted to suggest some drives too that would also be great. I don't want to get anything less than a 60G but can't afford anything larger than a 120G.

Thanks a lot in advance guys.

The Kingston V100 series are still great drives and they're very reliable. The V+ 100 series are also something to look into if you're looking at RAID 0 configuration as well. As you know TRIM will be disabled when you set RAID to SSDs, but the V+ 100 will perform efficiently even in RAID because of its individual built in house cleaning function. For a single drive, the V100 will be a great upgrade.

There's really nothing to worry about the new Sandforce drives. Corsair and Mushkin has great support and firmware updates will fix most problems.

Alright Karlos, seems like ages... The firmware problems with the initial crop of the new Sandforce controllers has been sorted, so if it were me I'd go for the Corsair 120GB Force Series 3.
