I am currently using 8GB (2x4G OCZ Reaper 1600MHz RAM...if I remove the heatsinks from both DIMMs so I can fit a Noctua NH-D14 to my Asus Crosshair IV Forumula, will the RAM still run at a safe temperature at 1600MHz ?

Obviously stress testing will make the RAM hot as it already gets toasty with the heeatsinks ON, but with general gaming use will it be OK ?

Cheers

is that your ram? but ive usually found that they are very well stuck on and if u try and take them off ull end up tearing the ram chips off the pcb

Aaah that's a bugger. There are screws in the RAM modules which appear to be holding the heatsinks on so I thought they might be removable but it seems not then.

I could always use an angle grinder or some similar tool to cut the top of them off. That would sort it nicely ; ) Or just spend another £100-£200 on some smaller RAM just to install a cooler. Then again, it might be worth it. Currently I have my CPU overclocked to 4GHz from 3.2GHz and there might be some more potential. Load temps at 73 degrees though ? Not good. At all. (Currently using H50)

Additionally...I could just scrap all my current Motherboard; RAM and CPU and go Intel. My first AMD processor and I'm disappointed.

yeah 73 to me seems very very high for an amd thats intel territory and they can deal with the heat

the 1090t is a good cpu but u need to get a better cooler strapped onto it man instead of replacing it all, and check out what the thermal limit of the cpu is

It's 65 degrees (the limit) which is why I'm so concerned. I may try cleaning the CPU and reapplying thermal paste.

Looks like I'm going to have to clock down the CPU until I can afford some more RAM as well as a cooler. Why new RAM ? Well because most of the decent air coolers out there will not fit with the OCZ Reapers installed. Then again, how does this RAM or This G.Skill RipJaw look ? I could get some bang for buck RAM for now and then a decent air cooler or just sit it out. Or crack out the angle grinder (haha).
