I've been watching TTLs youtube vids since about August although I don't subscribe. I just manually check most days.

The most I've ever spent on a PC was £2,700 in about 1993, and for that I got the first ever pentium (60Mhz, including fp bug), 1 Gb hard drive and 16Mb ram - awesome !!! I took a month off work in December to play Doom 2 and did not see the sun the whole time. Halcyon days. :-)

Nowadays, I tend to feast or fast when it comes to PCs. I'll spend a packet on a new rig and then upgrade it for as long as I possibly can. I really should have replaced the current machine at least 2 years ago (it is incapable of playing modern games), but have quite enjoyed being a complete miser and thinking of any way not to do so - even an intermediate CULV laptop to be exactly what a desktop isn't.

But the time has come to 'go large' again. After an aborted Scan 3XS order I'm going to build my own, which will be my second build ever. It is a lot easier nowadays with youtube to hand.

I have already bought the Coolermaster HAF-X (What a great case. Slightly dodgy tyre-tread aesthetics, but I'm warming to it), Corsair HX850 PSU. LG Blu-ray writer. 2Gb data drive. DVD writer.

The rig will have a nvidia 580 or dual 570s. Not decided. Availability may be a factor. And a 128Gb SSD.

As for the rest, I'm waiting to see what Sandy Bridge has to offer. TBH I'm an open-minded sceptic here. I suspect the more interesting reviews will appear a month after release, when the dust settles. I always had it in mind that the SB was intended for the laptop arena with the integrated GPU. Otherwise it's just extra heat for no gain.

But let's see what the benchmarks prove. Genuinely interested to see how this pans out.

Happy Xmas everybody :-)

Welcome! Be sure to post up a build log when you get it all sorted.
