ATI 5770 - 'Where's Ruby at?' Competition Prize and more

It's been a long time since I won a 5770 via this forum, and unfortunately from a mixture of delays (initially ATI but then, of course, exams!) I've only just got around to starting to bench it properly. I've been meaning to make this thread for a long time, so here it is! I promised I'd do a mini review for the community, and although it's now not as new a card as it was, it's still a great value one. However, there is a slight twist, as I currently also have a nVidia GTX280, which you may know is a more powerful card.

I'm currently in the process of benching the 280 and the 5770 and I plan to compare the results for all here once that's finished. What's the point you may ask? Well, I consider the 280 to be a fine card still, very capable even with the latest games, so consider it a good benchmark of awesome game performance, and we'll see just how close the 5770 can come for just a fraction of the price I paid for the nVidia card.

That's not all though. Once the GTX280 is benched I'm going to sell it and buy another 5770! Then, I'll bench the 5770CF performance and measure it against what's been seen so far. At the moment the 5770CF setup seems like a brilliant value for money choice, so let's see what it can deliver. OC3D has already covered 5770CF this year and it was very promising. We'll see if driver maturity and a different set of benchmarks has changed this. Is it still the brilliant setup that rivals a 5870 for almost £100 less?

I'll be benching a range of games on the machine below:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.8GHz

ASUS Crosshair III Formula

G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 (2x2G PC3-12800CL7 (7-8-7-24 @ 1600MHz)

Corsair H50 (2x Yate Loon 1200RPM Push-Pull Exhaust)

BFG Geforce GTX280 OC / ATI Radeon 5770 / ATI Radeon 5770 Crossfire

Corsair HX620 Modular power supply

Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer

2x1TB Samsung F1 HDDs (RAID 0)

250GB WD storage

ASUS DVD-RW

Zalman ZM-MFC1+ Fan controller

Antec P182SE case with 3x Yate Loon 1200RPM case fans

The current list of games/apps to bench is below:

3DMark Vantage

DiRT 2

Fallout 3

Need for Speed: Shift

Left 4 Dead

Far Cry 2

GTR: Evolution

Crysis Warhead

Grand Theft Auto 4

That's quite a lot of benching to get through, and it should be updated soon. I'll take any requests for games to bench (if I have them available of course - or at least a demo) and answer any questions you might have on methodology too. Initial results show the 5770 to be a surprise....

As well as this, I'll also be covering the general look and feel of the cards (presented to you via photography!), some of their key features and perhaps even a look at the drivers for any interested who haven't owned a nVidia/ATI card before.

So without further ado, here's a quick glimpse at the first set of cards to be benchmarked before all the results are up:

I'd welcome any input or feelings about the benches and tests to come. Of course when the results are up there'll be more to talk about! I could have done this like a private review but I felt that opening things up a little might make it more interesting, especially since 5770CF has already been covered here on OC3D (and fairly well too!).

PS - could an admin/mod please advise on the character/image limit on each post? - I may need to reserve some to keep this thread neat.

The GTX280 was a fairly short-lived card. It's hot, but my one isn't that loud at all (quieter than the 5770 in perceivable terms - I'll expand on that later) and it's performance is still extremely good today. I don't think the card has yet benefit from the massive amount of performance enhancements like those from nVidia seen on the G92 core, but it has improved non the less.

I just looked and noticed the DeathAdder has sneaked into one of the shots there! Indeed, it is a great performing mouse and comfortable to boot. I recently updated the firmware and now I've got the dreaded double-click problems however. I'll have to check the warranty if it gets any worse.

I'm looking forward to this too. I've got a 5770 myself but I've never been able to compare it with a GTX280 or anything similar. Would love to see the CrossFireX performance on your system aswell.
