HP Pavilion dv6812nr CD/DVD drive problems

hi, my friend has a HP Pavilion dv6812nr and the cd/dvd drive has stopped working. when you put a cd or dvd it isnt being detected. and the dvd drive icon on My Computer isnt there. It was working fine and then the next day it didnt.

Any thoughts what the problem could be?

btw the os is Vista 32bit home edition.
