Guide: Case Window Installation

Do you still have a boring old computer case, which needs something to make it stand out from the rest? Are you unaware how to install a window into your computer? Do you not want to pay the high prices to get a window pre-installed? If so, you will have great interest in this guide. Here you will learn how to install a window into your computer case quickly, cleanly and most importantly, easily.

Requirements:

Before the actual installation, you need a few things which are listed below:

∙ Computer Window Kit (or some plexi glass if you want to make the window manually)

∙ Masking tape

∙ Saw (I recommend using a scroll saw but you can use a jigsaw or dremel)

∙ Writing utensil

∙ Utility knife

∙ Drill

∙ Flat file

If you want to make your own window, simply cut the plexi glass to the proper size and shape before proceeding. The best saw to use is a variable speed Delta scroll saw with a jeweler's blade. I feel a scroll saw is more precise and leaves a smoother finish than other saws. You can also purchase pre-cut window kits from online retail stores like Xoxide.

Installation:

:anisx: or their staff are not responsible or liable if during this installation you happen to damage anything. Take proper safety precautions and always measure twice and cut once.

1. Remove your side panel from its case and lay it out on a flat surface with the outside of the panel facing up.

2. Decide upon the location that you wish to install your window, making sure that the window has proper clearance with all components inside the case. Place the window at least half an inch from any sides of the panel for structural purposes.

3. Place the masking tape around the edges where the window will be cut out (this is used to prevent the case from being scratched whilst cutting). Using a writing utensil, mark on the masking tape the outline of the window and be sure to add extra room, if required, for your window molding or mounting device. Use a square or tape measure if you want the window to be precisely in the middle or to see if it's horizontal with the base of the case.

4. For almost any saw you use, you will need a hole to start from, so simply drill a hole somewhere along the line.

5. Depending upon what saw you will be using to cut the metal you will need to adjust accordingly. Since the side panel is not likely to be perfectly level, if using a scroll saw (a.k.a saber saw) to cut the hole, you will need to tape some tiny scrap pieces of wood in order to create a level cutting surface resulting in a cleaner, precise, and easier cut.

6. After the hole has been fully cut out, if the edges are rough, you will want to use a flat file to smooth the area around the cut.

7. Place the window into the hole and it should align perfectly, providing that your measuring and cutting was accurate. You then simply attach the window to the hole (this can vary depending upon the setup of the window and which type of mounting mechanism has been included).

8. Install any fans or accessories you may have onto the window and then pop the side panel back on.

This is a fairly easy way to let your friends and family see your glamorous computer components. It should take roughly half an hour to complete, but it's well worth it. If you have any questions or comments regarding this guide, please feel free to post any questions!

Nice guide there. Might decide to eventually mod my case a bit more!

That'd be sweet XMS! If I didn't have a gigantic ass radiator on the top of my case I'd have a large case window up there for sure :)
