Difference between Windows server 2008 R2 and Windows server 2008

As per thread title

Can get them both on Dreamspark and would like to setup a file/printer server downstairs

Iirc 2008 was based on vista R2 was 7 or somthing like that.

Could be wrong, but think thats what I read somwhere :-/.

Server 2008 is based on the vista kernal, Server 2008 R2 is based on the win7 kernal.

I've recently installed server 08 r2. using exchange 2010, looking nice.
