SSD Or Not To SSD??? OQO E2 UMPC Help....

Hi,

I recently purchased a OQO E2 UMPC with a 1.6GHZ VIA C7-m CPU 1GB RAM and a 120gb HDD for internet usage on the go.

I intended to use this as a pocketable device which it is fine for but I have been pondering over the idea of switching my HDD to one of the cheaper SSD disk drives obviously a top branded uber SSD would be overkill for the job...

I have been considering upgrading with the hope of getting the following benefits

a) Lighter Weight

b) Improved Performance

c) And Slightly Better Battery Life

A & B meen the most to me but how much lighter will an SSD be over my current HDD, I get the feeling my HDD is making this just that little bit heavier, and will I get much of a benefit performance wise given my CPU etc?

I personally wouldn't do it. The SSD you linked to isn't the speediest model, and from reading reviews power saving over a standard drive doesn't seem to be all that great.

The weight thing is interesting, but again, I can't see it being that much.

Im aware this isnt the fastest model but I only have a VIA C7-M 1.6 Single Core CPU so this is not the speediest on the market by a long way.

But I thought this would be plenty powerfull enough vs the CPU but will there be any noticable performance increase e.g startup shutdowsn and general O.S use over my old HDD.

Can anyone verify how much lighter a 1.8 SSD is Vs a 1.8 HDD?

Eh I assumed they didn't need as much power as standard ? and I mean quite a bit less ?

Any1 studied this with figures ?

Thats also what I heard apparently it appears that in my instance about 30 mis can be added.

I always thought they did, however I was reading a review a few months ago where they did a head to head battery test HDD vs SSD, and the SSD won, but only by the smallest of amounts.

Nice1 on the freezes

I couldn't advise properly for weight/performance cos I really don't have enough experience of these.

OC3D reviewers could, I'm sure either w3bbo or Jim have tested enough of them to advise on that.

That's amazing if I'm honest. Just by pure mechanics alone, u would assume the platter drive to draw alot more over time.

I totally agree, the article was a bit of a shock to me as well..

It was only one article however, with any luck someone else will test SSD vs HDD soon and verify this.

I think it'd probably be a waste, I've got the Model 01+ that I use for college and all it's meant for is browsing and typing though I've got Worms Armageddon 2 working on mine ), I don't really see why you'd need much else in the way of specs.
