What's up with the Phenom II X4?

YOOOOOOOOOO!

Long time no see playa's, clocka's, and pimps!

FragTek is up on the band here. Getting ready to do a minor build and revamp now that my old arse Dell that i have been suffering with for the past year has taken a dump....

I am curious to know what the deal is with the Phenom II chips? Just a debugged version of the Phenom's, or what's the primary advantage?

This build is definitely going to be an all AMD build, no doubt about it.

Thanks yall for the info. Glad to see yall again, I see my post count is still intact ;) haha.

OMG its Fraggles!! Hey dude :)

Phenom II is what the Phenom should have been imo. It clocks better, has had a die shrink and doesn't have any nasty bugs (that we're aware of). I found it much nicer to work with than the original Phenom's tbh.

Phenom II is a 45nm die shrink of the Phenom, tweaked cores and added larger (6MB) cache. It's a far better chip then the original Phenom, performs better then the original Phenom, it's about as hot as the original Phenom.

The problem with the Phenom II is that it trails behind the Core 2 Quads and the i7s in most applications/tests. If the rig will be for gaming, the difference isn't noticeable and the Phenom II platform (The Dragon Platform) will serve well.

It is now possible to even do some overclocking on them, 3.6GHz is common, more with watercooling.

They are just on their way to switch from AM2/AM2+ (940 pin) with support for DDR2 to AM3 (941 pin) with support for DDR3, so you might want to consider that before buying. The AM2+ Phenom IIs will work in the AM3 boards, but the AM3 Phemon IIs will NOT work on AM2+ boards because of the extra pin.

Everyone's given you the technical aspect of what the Phenom II is, but I'll just give you what a Layman thinks.

If you're looking forward to spend your money on an i7 killer, sorry, but the Phenom II isn't for you. With that out of the way, let me explain that if you are looking for the best value for your money the Phenom II's will be marvelous.

The full potential of the Phenom II still lies ahead of us, and here's to hoping AMD gets back unto track!

Thanks guys!!! Phenom II it is for me then, I am looking for the inexpensive AMD quad that will perform, not looking for an i7 killer by any means, but looking for the best bang for my buck and with the prices for the Phenom II it looks to be about the best there is for the price.

Thanks again!

BTW dude, on accepting our advice you have to re-pledge your allegiance to Overclock3D and swear on oath that you will visit daily again, indulging in regular discussions and performing the art of overclocking.

LOL Jimbo. I will definitely try my best! I ended up going with the 920 proccy, 8gb of cheap g.skill, a tforce 790gx mobo, and a sapphire 512mb 4870. Hopefully it will free me from the hell known as pentium4 I've suffered with for the past year.

@Kempez: Hello sir!!! Good to be back, this place has grown!

Nice, nice, nice :D That should fly mate :yumyum:

I didn't buy an aftermarket cooler for her what kind of stable unvolted clocks should I be expecting to get? 3.2 perhaps?

Yeah should be possible mate. I've no idea what the stock coolers are like, but a smidgen of extra voltage might see you up to 3.4 on the right mobo.

The stock cooler is there nice copper based heatpipe cooler, probably the best stock cooler available I would reckon. This the reason I didn't pick up an aftermarket cooler.

Well with the 920 you don't have the unlocked multi but 3.2 should still be do-able, HTT or about... 225? Easy enough! Stock cooler is a noisy mo-fo though, but if you can live with that, rock on
