Seems wrong

I'm a complete noob at overclocking, however i learnt that changing the FSB on my Q6600 B3 was a simple way to get it to 3Ghz.

My Spec:

Q6600 B3 @ 3Ghz / Noctua u12p

Gigabyte P35-DS4

OCZ 8GB (4x2G PC2-6400C5 (JUST changed today)

Ever since changing it (from Corsair XMS2 PC6400C4), the memory timings were changed to default as they used to be on 4-4-4-12 with my other mem, and now it seems my quad is much hotter than it should be, and im not sure why:

Here's a pic of my bios:

piepiepie.co.uk/pub/vcore.jpg

Surely the vCore is way too high here? yet its set to auto in bios :S

CoreTemp + others:

piepiepie.co.uk/pub/coretemp.jpg

(cannot post URL because i dont have 15 posts )

(as you can see in this pic, i have even set the ram timings back to really slow speeds just to make sure it wasnt these)

The CPU used to idle at around 30-33C, but now it's idling nearly 50C so something cant be right?

I've even reseated the heatsink today and applied new compound, but it's made bugger all difference!

I just wondered if someone could take me step by step through what bios settings should be what, so i dont knacker my system up!

Thanks alot,

i saw the pics, and the core temp pic, the frequency of the cpu is a bit weird, take a look at mine

first: put all your mobo on default (reset it if you can)

then use cpuz again, also your cpu is running at 1,9ghz and it normaly runs at 2,4 at minimum

According to that bios screen, you are putting 1.558 volts through the processor. I'm surprised its not hotter than that. Reduce your voltage NOW. You haven't got water or sub zero cooling so you are putting your CPU in serious danger.

I don't know the exact voltage it should be (obv it will vary processor to processor) but you should be looking at 1.35-1.40 at absolute most.

In addition overclocking will increase the power draw of the processor.

Set the Vcore manually.

Never, ever, leave the voltage at AUTO if you're overclocking. In fact try not to leave it at AUTO anyway.

the reason that the speed is 1.9 is because the multi is at 6 not 9,looks like speedstep is on

hmm, i see, i never had this problem since my mobo dont have it , anyways thanks for the info.

addicted, a normal voltage for this cpu would be 1,25 ~ 1,35 try getting it down like the guys said. or you cpu could fry

ok so all that i need to do is set the cpu voltage down to what it should be and that will make it ok?

It was running at a low voltage before, i assume because i used all 4 slots instead of just the 2 ram slots it increased for some reason.

I noticed that reading up on guides i also need to disable speed stepping and other shizzle like that. When i go into the bios, what exactly will i need to change?

See:

pcstats.com/articleimages/200711/GBTGAP35DS4_BIOS2.jpg

What do i need to set each of those to?

Sorry to be a pain in the arse!

I'm no expert, but haven't you got 1.5v OVER the already set voltage controls on the DIMM?

I thought there was one setting for DIMM voltage, and the overvolt was just to pump even more in if you're hardcore? I'm amazed that the RAM hasn't let out the magic smoke yet.

Like your highlighted CPU one should be 0. Because you set the Vcore in another page and it's already at the correct 1.35v
