Tell me... That stuff that wraps around the tubing? Is it there purely for aesthetics, or does it serve a usueful purpose?

its for looking good and nothing else.

Tis called coil.

Well, i would never have said it stops kinking as its not very strong, but you can buy metal stuff which is pretty sturdy.
