Best Router for P2P

Hi guys.

Nice forum.

This is my first post here.

My question is the next:

I have a Linksys WRT54G currently. While the router works great for the most part, i need something better. When using p2p apps such at utorrent my router sometimes freezes up. My downloads work fine and are nice and fast. However, my ability to surf the net while all of this is happening is seriously hampered. I click on a link on a webpage and it's worse than dial-up. I am using Fiber from verizon and my speeds are 15MBps/2MBps. Anyone know of a good router that wont get flaky whne i try to multitask? Thanks.

Ur problem is overloading the uploading. I`ve had to correct a number of people`s installations where they, like urself, keep dropping internet connection which u have to reset the router for.

Afaic, whatever router u get will be prone to this and u would be better to look at the settings within utorrent and basically cap things down. Be sure ur upload max isn`t crazily high.

had the same issues with linksys just litterally this weekend moved to netgear, try em out you can get a 54mbps wireless one with a free usb thing for £39.99 from staples.

it seems to handle all the connections better, the linksys hated p2p tbh. just insta crash on any err 'linux distro' torrents i had running, and it HATED my ps3....

edit after seeing rast's post: also limit the upload on ya torrents to about 70% MAX of your upload bandwidth otherwise it'l crash out no matter what router you've got

I`d consider 70% to be high tbh.

But to be fair, ideally u want to set it as low as u can - be sure it`s working ok, then increase it. Keep increasing it until u have a problem. As with many peer things, u`r download is in ration to ur upload.

Also be aware that there are p2p bots out there that are set to take note of ur ip requesting certain "stuff" and will flood u in return.

.. just don`t click on everything starting with "Britney Spears.."

I'm also on fibre and I had the same issue with some crap old 2wire router. BBC iPlayer kept uploading at full speed even when it was told not to and just killed the connection. I went and got a Belkin n1 vision and now it's working just dandy.

i got a 2wire 2700hgv (sbc version hack) and its great

just limit ur half open and max connections

find a good number and go higher when stable

All good suggestions, but your best bet is to use a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato, these give you much more control over your router and fix the timeout value on linksys routers (by default half open connections can take 3 days to timeout, which bogs down the router) you can get tomato from http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato and guides for setting it up at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_Firmware

I have DD-WRT installed on my WRT54GL and its the best router I have ever had. No probs, great speeds, low latency for gaming.
