Mixing Memory

I jsut thought of this for no reason, I was going to upgrade from 2x 1gb OCZ SLI memory to 2x "GB ocz gold series memory.

So a small speed downgrade for mroe space.

You think I could run it all in dual channel? 6gb of memory.

So 1gb 2gb 1gb 2gb in that config.

My dad said it to me I didnt think of it it should work though right?

Think most mobos will allow that. Most will let u do it with different brands too, just aslong as the quantities are the same.

U just usually lose the critical timing claims.

Yea it should be OK, just set all memory voltage high enough and set the timing + speed to accomodate the slowest sticks before you stick the memory in as you may not be able to boot into bios with the original settings

Just make sure your ram settings are set to the worst of the two specs and you'll be fine

Atm it wont however this ram is for going to Vista64 premium. As soon as I get my raid card im nstalling it not atm due to rubbish 680i LT raid.

DX10 uselessness

Yep im quite ok with setting it to lowest timings it was either this or just use the 2x2gb ones anyway, so yep im quite happy with this turn out

I think it would be quite possible to get it down to better timings anyway, 5-5-5-18 is pretty low should go down quite a bit IMO. 2.2volt goodness.

Thanks guys! *happy*

I was reading the users guide to the Gigabyte X38-DQ6 and found this:

Quote:
When memory modules of different capacity and chips are installed, a message which says memory is operating in Flex Memory Mode will appear during the POST. Intel® Flex Memory Technology offers greater flexibility to upgrade by allowing different memory sizes to be populated and remain in Dual Channel mode/performance.
Maybe this only works for the new X38's though.

Unless this is something brand spanking new, it`s previously been that in order to have dual access to 2 mem strips, they would need to be the same size.

Emphasis being, if u had a 256m and 512m strip in paired slots, trying to access something at about the 384m point on both isn`t going to happen.

Gotta be something new`n`clever Wonder if all X38 chipsets do that. Nice find
