Domain Name Problems

so i bought my domain 2 years ago, and i just got a letter from nominet saying it ran out on september 23rd, and i now owe the £94 pounds if i want to renew it. £94!!!!

well i dont have that kind of money...

they also said if i contact my registration agent, it will be cheaper. the problem is i cant remember any of my login details for registerfly.com, and the email they had on record was @sysxtreme.com, which is obviously now expired and so any emails they send to it will bounce.

so if i let it expire, will it go back to being available, so i can buy it again at a cheap price?

is there any other way i can keep this domain name without paying huge amounts of money?

i know i bought the domain with registerfly.com, but it says on the bottom of the nominet letter that my agent is TUCOWS, however i cant see to figure out how to renew my domain on their website. im confused!

any help appreciated guys,

ta

edit: i also looked at transferring my domain using 123-reg.com, and they gave me these conditions...

After you complete this order, there are a few things we will need you to do:

First, please make sure the admin contact for the domain name(s) to be transferred is correct. Find out more information about admin contacts.

For .UK domain names

Please ask your existing domain name provider to change the IPS tag to 123-REG.
what does this mean, whats an ips tag, and will i be able to do this without logging into registerfly?

If it`s not something that ur actually `using` for anything at the moment, I`d be tempted to let it die, then re-get it from somewhere a damnsite cheaper. But then I`ve never done it - so I don`t know if there`s any pitfalls behind doing that.

NameCheap.com is pretty darn cheap, US based, but in the world of internet I don`t know if that means anything as long as u`r able to pay. I haven`t read anything into them, I just use them as an example. $9.99 sounds cheap but of course I don`t know the details or what that comes with.

If u do "whois" on ur domain name - does anything helpful to u come back ? These days u`r info can be blocked from anything coming back, but u can try.

SamSpade.org run a whois portal.

it is being used...

i dont mind letting it go and rebuying, but i do need to know if there are any pitfalls to this, like will a company buy it and try to sell it to me for higher, or will the price be increased because it has been bought before?

Are you the registered domain name owner?

Nominet should be able to reassign the domain name regardless of the registration 'agent' provided you are the registered domain name owner.

If it was deffo purchased via registerfly mate, I'd drop them an email explaining the situation. At worst they will send a new password via snail mail to your home address, but hopefully they should be able to verify your identity by the payment method used (debit card number etc).

Don't let it expire. One of those crappy companies will snap it up and try and sell it back to you for something stupid like £1k.

And don't you have some Dav0s imposter that might jump at the opportunity?

All I know that if you want to transfer the domain over, you'd ask ur current provider to change the tags to 123-reg or whatever...

What`s the process of registering a name u`rself ? I can`t imagine that every possible name is owned by some1. www.wuibveuiwbewervwqerve.co.uk - if I want that, I must be able to have a chat with cisco directly or something.

mine ran out and i didn't have to pay a fortune to get it back i just re-bought it through name alerts (very cheap)

don't forget if its a fresh registration you have to wait 60 days to transfer it from registration date

so if it dies buy it from where you intend to use it, if you renew it through the cheaper people it will be fine though
