what to do when a power surge occurs??

i had one of these Lastnight, and the More i read about it on the Internet, its making me think my Computer isnt dead after all,im reading that its good to let the Computer rest when a power surge effects it,i took it to my local comp shop after it didnt turn back on and he couldnt figure it out we tried a new PSU and it did not work he tried a few other things to,and it hasnt turned back on Since, is it good to let it just sit there and rest?

should i unplug everything, or is it okay to Leave everything alone on the computer while its off. thanks.

Sometimes this can be hampered (or not depending on u`r pov) by a bios setting that is on most mobos.

There`s something like "On power failiure : Last-State/off/on" - or similar.

I`ve witnessed some bios(s) where this is set to "off" and it can take a bios/cmos clear to get it to come back on. This is whilst trying new psus and whatnot. So without doing it u can be led to think the mobo is fried.

Having said that - sometimes the mobo is fried !!

If you live in a country or area that is susceptable to power spikes then the best thing is to inviest in a multi plug with protection.

That way your rig is safe.

Thankfully we (UK) have the world most advanced and intergrated power infrastructure in the world - if I beleive the company hype we're fed here at work!

Sorry I can't be of more help. Sadly something may have died, you may need to check each individual component to discover what is dead, if anything.

Strip down to the basics, proccy, optical drive, one stick of ram, grahics card. Clear your CMOS the long way - remove the batt, leave for 1/2hr etc.

im in a area where power 'spikes' and sometimes get surge if its raining/too hot/too cold.

and me eletric guy told me to get those belkins surge protector for my stuff, i didnt really took his words seriously tho, till i gave it a try last summer....

remember last summer we had a bloody hot time? yup, the area im in had loads of spikes and surge in the power lines.

and one day, me belkin surge protector saved my comp, by blowing out its surge protector thingy inside instead of blowing up me comp!

well....thats my advice.....

anyway, when like before i had no protector thingy, and my comp gets a big 'O', i clear CMOS, unplug everything and wait over night, my luck it works every time....

you said, you clear CMOS, how exactly do u clear CMOS... and also when u say unplug everything,u mean PSU cable,as thats the Only thing that really makes the Comp run....

unplug power cord from back of PSU, unplug all power connector inside comp, unplug all USB, LAN etc etc, not taking apart the comp, just unplug everything that can pass eletric from one place to another.

and clear CMOS, i take the battery out from mobo, jumper pins set to clear, and just leave it like that till next day.

then, what i do is plug back in 24pin and 8pin(intel boards), GFX 6pin+8pin(newer cards) and nothing eles, and pray it boots up with a beep and goes into POST.

if it POST, i then reboot, goes into BIOS, check all the settings and away i go!

if it works, i then plug back in one thing after the other, each time booting into windows then shut down, untill i have everything plugged back....

Don't forge to plug the battery back in.
