No Name - Just My Rig

Hey all,

Okay, so seeing as I'm asking so many questions around the forums trying to get my rig done, I thought it's only fair that you see my rig take shape over the next coming weeks, as well as give you a view of it for easier understanding when I'm asking questions.

The rig is still pretty empty so far, I've just been buying a component every few weeks or so but now that I'm close to finishing, another two weeks and I'll be finished, got to add a GTX 770 and some RAM yet, I was hoping for some green RAM sticks (not naked but a green cover) but can't find any so I will probably get some Corsair Dominator Platinums.

Specs:
Case: Corsair Obsidian 500D
Motherboard: Gigabyte G1. Sniper M5 MATX
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K
SSD: 2x OCZ Vertex 4 (Got these for free!)
PSU: Corsair AX860

Going to install the PSU over the weekend, received it a couple of days ago, so you can't all point out my dodgy wiring just yet. ;) Also what do people do with their case fan cables? I really don't know where to hide them, I just wrap the cable around the outside of the fan but it looks aweful.

Let me know what you all think, what you would do to it, and how I can light this up with a slight green theme, whilst keeping it cool and quiet.

Oh yeah, I was going to buy a H100i but left it for now as I'm not planning on overclocking soon so thought I'd just stick on the Intel reference cooler, doesn't look great but I'm just hoping it doesn't scream when spinning!

So I'm kindof praying that fan is quite, cool and the standard thermal paste on the cooler is good enough!

Also am I right in saying I could stick the SSD anywhere and remove the drive bays, seeing as it's flashed based, data won't corrupt will it?

As Tom has stated many times in his video's use white lighting to Accent your other colours and your rig will look much better for it, should be a nice build when completed so enjoy your build

Thanks Excalabur50, I did see Tom say that I think it was actually the review of my board and he said a bit of white lighting will make it look really nice, not over doing the green so I will try and add a bit of green/white in there.

I just purchased some Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 1600MHz from Dabs for £144, so only the GPU left now. I'll wait on buying that now and try and get the best deal I can. Might even get a 780 over a 770.

You are WELCOME the dom plats will look amazing in there is there any reason you haven't thought about the new card from AMD that's out in Sept. 25? Might really be worth the wait

Just on the GPU subject the green LED's on a reference Titan cooler 780 would just be enough to accent the motherboard nicely. Add a little white light and that would be slick. Seriously white is the only colour for case lighting, I have RGB strips and thought I would keep them red, turns out their always white with a white light on the H100i, even with the red rog light on my board and green lights on the gpu coolers it all pulls together under white light.

Some pics in of my 550D right here, I take little pride in the cable management right now hence why I don't have a build log, it's just rammed in there to work and look acceptable from the front. When I get my modded 550D back I will clean everything off and start a fresh build log, hopefully next week. - https://picasaweb.google.com/111232531553572170037/August232013?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyGio3wyceANw&feat=directlink

Seen a few members mention AMD's new card. No particular reason I personally have had good experience with AMD/ATi, if it's out in September then I'm sure going to look into it, obviously depends on price/performance.

Aslong as this rig is ready a couple of weeks before BF4 is released to give me time to get it set up, configured, tested etc. then I can wait for AMD.

Liking those pictures of the red in the case. I don't think I'm going to buy a DVD/Blu-ray drive. I can get Windows 8 on another way...but I don't have my CD-Key for my other three downloads of the copy when I bought it on release...s***

Edit: Would it be worth putting in a green cathode or something for some extra green, or would you really just keep it to white lighting? I'm not sure if to get coloured case fans, I don't know what these case fans perform like yet so not sure if they are average or brilliant.

Yeah i'm taking my BR drive out and possibly the mechanical drive. I've got two 240GB Neutron GTX's i'm going to mount on a plate on the optical bays. Still going to need an optical bay slot for the corsair link commander and possibly a storage drive but may just keep it external for films/pictures/backup, still deciding. I'm also getting a window and stealthing it out some more and adding even more acoustic foam. Turning the PSU the right way up also so I can see when it spins for entertainment. Bit of braiding, smarten the cables etc etc... should be slick.

Yeah seriously no green lighting at all if it were me I would be torn between two ideas as far as colour scheme goes. Either get corsair air series fans and paint the rings green and keep the cables black. OR to be less mainstream get some scythe gentle typhoons with the grey blades, and get some custom braided extensions which were all grey except for one streak of lime green to pull out the grey on the board.

Then again now that I think of it could go with white fan rings, white braided cables and green, white and black it quite coherently.

I think I favour the green and grey accent with white lighting idea best :)

LED fans just aren't with it anymore IMO, been there done that, it works on some levels but not in an Obsidian with Dom Plats, go classy...

I have looked (only briefly) at custom braided green cables. I'm not sure, I do like black and green braided though. Going to Google those fans, and cables for the grey effect and see what it would look like. :)

Mate stick to white lighting if you can it will look much better for your rig than green, just accent everything else green like cables and fan rings if you buy the Corsair fans the paint the rings the same colour as the mainboard green will really look the gonads

I quite like those Scythe Gentle Typhoons. Think some grey fans and cabling could work, at the moment although I like it, it's kind of too black. It might look different when everything else is in there though.

Would you recommend whacking a couple of fans on the side window or keep it closed off with the sound proofing foam attached?

I want this really quiet though so not to many fans.

Hella no keeps fans out of the side window! Keep them out of the floor too, I had a corsair AF140 in the floor even spinning at 700rpm the air being pulled through it sounded horrific, I think the bottom fan mount is a serious afterthought and totally kills the acoustics of the case. I have 5 fans and that's enough to keep my two 780's on form so you should be great with two in the front and two or three in the top if you go H100i.

Yeah didn't want any in the bottom, don't want it sucking any carpet fibers in. I'll leave that side window sealed shut too then. Is the stock cooler safe at keeping Haswell chips cool? Don't want no explosions!

Just saw it can hit 90 in temps with the stock cooler. Urgh. More money.

Okay, fitted my PSU this morning but I' am seriously baffled by this!...

The CPU 12v connector DOES NOT fit, if you check out the image below, the connector on the right fits the CPU, the pattern of pin holes matches up, but that end of the cable is for the PSU...the other end is the actual end for the Motherboard, and doesn't fit. Am I missing something here or do I need a new cable?

I'm annoyed.

Erhm... check if there are any other 8pin (4+4 pin) cables cause you might be trying to put a GPU power cable into your CPU power header.

Already checked that, the cables (on the flat side) actually say "760/860 Only" on one header and the other says "CPU" but to double check it I did check the PCI-E Cabls out.

I'm seriously confused. Never had this issue before.

Edit: Originally I had the PSU end in the CPU socket I thought the "760/860 Only" was just referring to don't use them with any other PSU but when it came to connecting it to my PSU I realised, it's double locking clip where as you can only fit on clip into the PSU.

Yes, the 760/860 only part goes into the PSU and the CPU side goes into the motherboard. The double locking clip is so that you can take them apart in case your motherboard only has a 4 pin CPU power header.

are you sure you are fitting it in the cpu power socket, some motherboards have additional pci-e power connectors on the motherboard for additional power to the pci-e lanes.

Are you sure that you have the clip the right way? There's a little latch on the header to put the clip on the connector on.

Otherwise, can we have some pictures?
