gigabyte 990fx ud5 problem

too many shrooms
right so i was going to give my FX 8350 an overclock today, but when i have gone into the bios i have encountered a weird problem. as it stands it wont let me access most of the bios features, they all seem to be stuck on auto. i cant find anything out about this through google or gigabytes website, my board is the rev.3 model any help would be appreciated

i use the 990fx ud3, ill turn my pc off and look into my bios to see if i can find a setting you may have missed.

i go into my bios go under MB intelligent tweaker (MIT), in there is green writing saying ** System Voltage Optimized ***, under that you should set System Voltage Control from Automatic to Manual.

this is how i unlock voltage control on my ud3, it may be different on your motherboard

Right thanks for the input mate, I have sorted it now. Any advice on overclicking the 8350?

There are two versions of this board. (bios wise at least) The rev 1.0/1.1 are old fashioned award bios and the rev 3.0 is UEFI. I've just picked up a UD5 rev 3.0 & 8320 this week and will be sorting it out over the weekend. I know that some gigabyte boards used to hide functions in the bios that you could get up using the CTRL + F1 command. (doubt this is still the case on UEFI)

No there is not hidden setting or bios menu I tryed ctl f1, it was because I was pressing the wrong button to change things. As the mouse dont work in the uefi bios weirdly

its great you have it sorted now. i have very limited experience overclocking FX processors, i have mainly experience with phenom IIs and intel 1155 cpus.

overclocking should be similar to what your used too with your old fx 6100, I've seen people get 4.4-4.5 or higher easily enough.

As i'd advise most people, consult TTLs overclocking guide. Most if not all of the knowledge is transferable to AM3+ FX overclocking.

Yeah I am doing what I did with my fx 6100, I have it at 4.4ghz at the mo but it keeps downclocking for some reason.

Right now after 30 mins its at 57c an the highest its been is 58c running a small fft test in prime

I had a problem with my CPU (FX-6300) on a 990FXA-UD3 appearing to throttle to 3ghz when testing using OCCT just playing around, turbo disabled in bios. Temps were fine, think highest it got was 52c. I opened AMD Overdrive, enabled then disabled turbo in there and the throttling stopped

Some googling suggested VRM getting too hot on 990FX boards causing some people throttling issues.

Yeah I have heard that about the ud3 but not the ud5, I have turbo mode turned off in the bios an it ram prime for 40 mins without any problems. I will look into it again when I get home, as I had to go out

Right I am still getting my core speed dropping while doing the small fft test, I have all power saving funtions off I have set my load line callibration to very high, but I am still experiencing a drop in vcore voltages and clock speed.any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Well you finally bit the bullet and went for the UD5 and the FX-8350 I see! :p

Anyway, how hot are the VRM heatsinks or the CPU heatsink on the board when the throttling is occuring? Too hot to touch?

Aye mate I had to scratch the itch, I am not sure about the heatsinks nothing was above 55c in hw monitor. An prime ran for an hour an a half before I stopped it as the core on 52c and its being throttled, didnt seem right to me at all have you had problems overclocking yourself (as you have the same board and cpu I think my mobo is the rev.3)

Mine is the Rev 1.1 without the UEFI BIOS.

I haven't really tried to overclock the FX much with this board, I've been running at stock with an undervolt of 125mV for ages now, however the few times I have overclocked it I've normally got bluescreens in Windows and lock-ups in Linux (Debian) rather than throttling.

When I did try it, I got 4.8GHz out of it for an hour or two of Prime at something like 1.49V with it going into the mid 60's under load (according to AMD Overdrive), no throttling though.

Putting your hand on the VRM heatsinks is worth a shot just to see if they're red-hot to the touch or not.

yeah a you are the second person to say they used amd overdrive, i haven't used it myself as i thougtht doing an overclock in the bios was more stable. i will have to check the vrm's later as i have some stuff to do today, i will let you know tho fella. also my vcore voltage selector was weird to, you cant select a voltage you want it does it some weird way that is quite confusing. i was told to try and keep it around the 55c/60c (HW Monitor) at full load, does that sound about right to you?

Well my few overclocks including the one in my signature were all done via the BIOS, I only really use AMD Overdrive for temperature monitoring or stress testing.

I remember reading somewhere that the FX CPUs throttle when they get to 70C. AMD obviously set that temperature there for a reason, so I'd say as long as you're below that for 24/7 usage you should be fine.

Right good news, I have sorted the throttling problem out. At the moment I am running a prime 95 small fft test (15 mins in). got it at 4.4ghz from 1.356v, x20 on the multiplier an 220 on the fsb. my temps at the moment are held at 61c, now I am wondering if that is ok for a 24/7 overclock.any and all advice appreciated

Thanks
