because its a kitchen appliance to us over here and the common place to find a washer and/or a dryer

Word. Basement is the most common place for that stuff here.

We don't have a lot of free space in the UK. It is the 6th most densely populated country in the world, excluding a few small island countries, so we tend to have smaller house/flats.

sure your not thinking of a bungalow?(to any no uk'ers thats a house on 1 level-everything downstairs,no upstairs lol)
