Hi all.

OK- an interesting topic that I hope we can enjoy.

What makes that screen "pop"?

The 3.8K resolution?
The colour depth 4bit/8bit/+f /10bit?
ITS/PLS/VA/Twisted nematic ?
Contrast?
grey to grey speed?
pixel update speed?

It's a stupid subject to discuss, however I've read too many forums where this topic drifts into previous discussions. There are some intelligent posters on this board.

There are so many angles to take here and there isn't really a great answer unless you give a specific situation but for me personally the single biggest factor that takes a screen from looking dead to popping like crazy and that's gloss, it's not practical and it's not technologically amazing but when looking at a phone/ipad/macbook/apple cinema display and all of the other pretty typical stuff with a glass screen the contrast and colour look amazing. Uselss for editing or gaming but otherwise.

I've never seen any +60fps stuff, i'm sure it could sell me a ROG swift lol. Are there any selections of epic monitors on display anywhere in the UK?

I must be really missing out on viewing this forum at 144MHz. Does it mean I can read faster? Excel must, eh, excel (pun, soz) at that frequency...

Okay, I'm being purposefully facetious here, but I'm trying to illustrate that many people use their monitor for more than just C*unterStrike. It's a balance of what's important and a high vertical refresh rate comes lower in the list for many.

Aha. He asked for our opinions, i am not the god damn ambassador of all PC users. To me nothing matters even half as much as refresh rate and that even though i spend a lot of time with text as well. I don't need proper colors because i have no interest in creating art, i don't need large screens because i have good eyes, i rather have multiple screens, i don't need a high resolution because the games i play are usually low res.
I didn't buy my monitor because it looked nice.
I am not interested in having a discussion if you are just going to be a prick.

You stated fact, not opinion, in mathematical notation no less. I disagreed, you went 144Mhz on my ass and in a round about way called me a prick. Fair enough, that is your opinion and it's also your prerogative to ignore me.

Back on topic, if I could get a large monitor (>30") with g-sync or free-sync whatever it's called tech, and I don't mind saying it - with a high refresh rate, I'd be on it.

You mocked me for preferring 144hz, what did you expect. You didn't just disagree. Read your own post and tell me that wasn't condescending.
Also freesync and gsync won't make as much of a difference at high refresh rates, at 144hz screen tearing isn't really a thing anymore.
 
They make a difference at every single hz. It just allows everything to be on par. You can 144hz but if your only putting out 100fps then sure it will still look good but compared to freesync/gsync it will look even better since it can also display that same 100hz. Then the next refresh will also be the same as the next seconds FPS. We all know this already but frame for frame and hertz for hertz freesync/gsync are better than 120/144hz monitors. Just creates a more smooth picture.

I didn't say that it makes no difference, but at 144hz gsync makes far less of a difference than at 60hz.

I did not either. I said at every hz it makes a noticeable difference. Does not matter how high or low it is. It will still have the same improvements over a static hz rate.

For me both higher refresh rate and higher res. Give me a 144hz 1440p any day. I've tried 4k (pretty but too graphically intensive) and a 144hz monitor (hnng that refresh but not every game can make full use of it so why waste?) Those two combined would (for me) look the best.
its a shame the only one that fits the bill currently has gsync and is ROG.

The shame is what your asking for simply throws the idea of budget out the window.

I would also like one of those monitors, shame G-SYNC doesn't work on my R9 290 lol. Also a shame I can't afford one either :(.

I haven't ever tried a high refresh rate monitor, but I definitely look forward to having a variable refresh rate monitor more. Smoother gameplay at almost any framerate (within reason)! WIN!!!
 
Going from 60Hz to 144Hz is ok as I recently had the BenQ 144Hz and it was a nice experience but nothing to get excited over, Maybe if your a pro level gamer and need every single edge you can get but even then it's still debatable, BUT, Each to their own.

And I would never buy a monitor with a technology in it that was locked down to 1 GPU manufacturer, Freesync is just around the corner :)

I refuse to get Gsync as I don't want to be tied to one gpu manufacturer for however long I have the monitor. I prefer to mix it up now and then with who I get y'see. If the monitor is made by someone good it'll last fo' dayyyyz. I'm not too fussed about budget (within reason) when it comes to monitors as its usually YPFWYG (you pay for what you get). My current screen is aight. Poor response time but as I don't do TF2 to a slightly competitive level anymore its no big deal. I paid £125 for it about two years ago. Its easily earned its worth.

Monitors are such a personal preference thing. Personally I really enjoy high refresh rates as I am really sensitive (if thats the right word...) to screen tearing. High res is also excellent and I like having any excuse to get high end gpus ^_^

I bought the asus 144hz one that upgrades via gsync, (without gsync) I found 120/144hz a bit meh, it's nice don't get me wrong but.. the panel looked like a complete pile of shit. Bought 2 sent them both back for a refund (only got 2 because one had a stuck pixel)
I REALLY missed the extra pixels of 1200p over 1080p as well.

I'll be sticking to IPS, and I'll only buy 16:10 screens from now on. Colour quality/blacks just so much nicer.

Did you apply an ICC profile? That makes the colors a lot more bearable.
