Update: when the rig is fully loaded temps got a bit high(60c on the cpu and 61c on the mcp) while the gfx cards stayed around 48c. also while doing this test i noticed that the second thread on prime 95 seemed to have gotten stuck in that threads 1,3, and 4 but 2 didnt complete anything beuond the first operation.

based on this i think its safe to say its not a heat problem, i'll try doing a repair install of windows and see what happens

i was in the process of making an up to date image of my disk when the computer froze. this is important b/c i used a boot disk of the program to do so, i believe that this should narrow it down but im not sure to what exactly cpu, mobo, hdd?

hdd would be favorite. Although memory will make everything look faulty.

thanks for the link, but the problem is i dont know how to test for this as there seems to be no link between the occurences. i bumped the voltage of the cpu up a notch maybe that will do it. i'm printing the steps out now incase it happens again but if it was software wouldnt there be a event in the event log?

UPDATE: well i dont know but it seems like increasing the cpu voltage helps (though i dont know how i would test this). at 3.3ghz 1.3375v was enough until maybe 2-3 months ago when this started. however i have a thoery that this may be caused by restoring an image of vista but i cant remember EXACTLY when this started or if it correlates with an image restore.
