What would be your choice gpu if you would decide today?

What would you buy if you would build a new rig today?

9800 gtx – (230eur-280eur) / 8800 gts 512mb-(200-240eur),

2 * gf8800gt 1024mb/512mb – (260eur – 300eur both),

2 * 3870 512MB gddr4 - (260eur – 300eur both)/ gddr3 (240eur - 270eur both),

or perhaps something else in this prize/performance range?

I've read in a review, that crossfire scales better than sli. Both sli and crossfire are about 40eur cheaper than a 3870x2 and a lot cheaper than a 9800gx2. But the question is, can you use this multi gpu power in nowadays games or in future games for that matter, because of the lack of support? And what about micro stuttering in sli/crossfire systems or multi gpu cards, does it have a big(ugly) influence on the game play? The mb would of course suite the gpu (nforce 750/780 or a p45/x38/x48). Or would you wait almost 1 month for 4850/4870 or nvidia 9900(but these 9900 should be in the same prize range as the 9800gx2, at least the ones they will put out in late June, so you must have deep pockets).

So I would like to hear your opinion (just a general discussion).

Thx, niky_d.

you can't wait for new hardware otherwise you will never buy anything.

New stuff is always just around the corner.

Out of the list though, the 9800GTX, would love one myself if I had the money.

I don't usually say wait, but in this case I think it will be worth waiting a month or so

Yep that was the intension of my first reply, since it is "around the corner" the next gen release. Wether u decide to jump to the next gen or u can still get the 9800GTX ( if the price is to high) the price of the "old gen" cards will drop significantly.

I'd buy a £10 Geforce 7200-whatever to get the machine up and firing. Then I'd look at the new tech and see if it's any good. First reasons would be theres no decent new releases for ages, next one is Stalker Clear Sky, and thats at the end of august. After that Far Cry 2. I wouldn't want to by a 9800GTX, which will be more than fast enough for any games now for it to suck horribly on the first games to push it.

Sometimes I think the hardware market is moving intentionally slower due to the obscene lack of decent PC titles this year. When was the last time there was a jaw dropingly good PC only title?

Perhaps a lil bit "lack" of competition ( ATI), no I am not a Nvidia fanboy, but I hope really this time ATI can show us some REAL competition, dont like the attitude of Nvidia lately, with their releases....

I don't think I worded that quite right above.. I know theres a lack of competition between ATI and nvidia. However I imagine they realize when big releases are scheduled, Crysis for example, they bring out their new cards so people can play the games. The 8800GT for example came out at an absolutely prime time for the manufacturers to cash in on the big game which was Crysis.

Not everyone buys graphics cards for benchmarking, people won't upgrade them if they've got no reason to.

Appologies for the hijack nicky!
