if your getting BSOD in game then yes its very likely that you have sey the clocks to high put the setting on default thenplay see if you get a BSOD if not then its clear that you have
you want to then increase the clocks up slowly by 20 or 10 and test it using a strong game for a good 15/30mins and check for any artifacts and keep an eye on temperature cos the nvidia cards once they reach 100'c the drivers automaticcaly stop working which causes bsods or a crashed system

Clocks are never to high untill u get artifacts and temps are to high, if u dont got any of those , dont need to worry

BSOD are
often signs of a instable system , and volts need to be added ( vcore/ NB/ FSBv/ vDIMM. are u 100% sure your RAM is oke( do a few loops of memtest86+)? If you system is o/ced i would put everything on stock first so u can outrule your system causing the BSOD and not your GFX.
For quick system check, download OCCT ( google) and do the 30min test.

Yea I ques u had hit a wall, and its the limit of your card, either the cooling isnt sufficient or u need more volts( modding is required) to push it further.

Cheers man, I would wait a few weeks till Nvidia launch their next gen, and expect a "big" price drop on the 9800GTX
