Dodgy SATA cable or too sharp a bend in a SATA cable (they recommend keeping the cable bend at less than 90 degrees) can cause data corruption. Obviously RAID arrays are more succeptible to these issues, but data corruption can still be caused on a single HDD because of them. I lost my RAID array because of a flakey SATA cable.
